ACWA Power signs power purchase deal for Egypt’s 200MW Kom Ombo solar plant – Egypt

The PPA was signed by Rajit Nanda, chief investment officer at ACWA Power, and Sabah Mashaly, chairman of the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, in the presence of senior executives from ACWA Power and delegates from the Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy.

Construction is expected to be completed during the first quarter of 2021. Once operational, the plant is expected to cater to the power needs of 130 thousand households, in addition to offsetting 280 thousand tonnes of CO2 per year.

Acciona inks PPA with state-run desalination plant in Chile – Chile

Acciona has signed a supply deal with Chilean water utility Empresa Concesionaria de Servicios Sanitarios SA (ECONSSA Chile) that will fulfil the energy needs of a water desalination plant set to come online in the Atacama desert next year.

The Spanish firm said in a release on Wednesday that it will supply energy to the plant from a mix of its Chilean renewables operations. It claims to have 291MW of operational facilities and 393MW under construction.

ACWA Power awarded two 125MW solar projects in Ethiopia – Ethiopia

ACWA Power won the bid for the plants during the first round of Ethiopia’s solar programme organised under the new PPP law.

ACWA Power and Ethiopia Electric Power (EEP), the state-owned electricity producer, and the Ministry of Finance signed a letter of intent. The entities will proceed to sign a long-term power purchase agreement for the projects at US$2.52 cents/kWh over a time span of 20 years before the end of 2019.

Kenya turns to Saudi investor to make water drinkable in arid Turkana region – Kenya

Authorities in Kenya’s driest region are in talks with a Saudi investor to build a desalination plant, after hopes of finding drinking water from an aquifer were dashed.

Tito Ochieng, the director of water services in Turkana, in the north of the country, said the potential investor – Saudi-owned Almar Water – has already signed a deal to build a $160m (£125m) desalination plant in Mombasa.

Cabinet Approves $25m Desalination Project – Iraq

The Cabinet held its regular weekly meeting in Baghdad on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Adil Abd Al-Mahdi.

It authorised the Ministries of Education, Higher Education and Scientific Research, other ministries, public bodies and local councils to recruit holders of post- graduate degrees, and to exempt this round of recruitment from applicable clauses in the 2019 Federal Budget.

The exemption is for this year only.

U.S. EPA to Provide $585 Million for Climate-Resilient Huntington Beach Seawater Desalination Plant – United States

Poseidon Water released the following statement in response to today’s announcement that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has selected the proposed Huntington Beach Desalination Project to apply for $585 million in credit assistance under the federal government’s Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (WIFIA).
