Thousands protest in dry riverbed in central Iran – Iran

Thousands of Iranians gathered in a dried up riverbed in the central city of Isfahan to protest mismanagement of water resources, state media reported.

Farmers and their supporters carried signs reading “Where is my Zayandeh River?” as they stood on the cracked ground where the Zayandehrood River once flowed, next to the famous Khaju bridge.

The river, the largest river in Iran’s central plateau, has largely disappeared for the past two decades because of drought and diversion of water to industry and farming upstream.

6 GW green hydrogen project powered by solar and wind proposed for SA – South Australia

Kallis Energy Investments, led by South Australian-based Terry Kallis, is proposing to develop an enormous 6 GW project in the state’s north.

The Moolawatana Renewable Hydrogen Project, as it’s called, could potentially see a combined solar and wind farm, each with up to 3 GW of capacity, being used to power electrolysers producing renewable, green hydrogen.

Kallis told pv magazine Australia the project will likely not be grid connected, and therefore able to avoid the congestion and grid connection issues which have plagued numerous large-scale projects [

Keep Diablo Canyon open to help meet emission reduction goals – California

California has established itself as a global leader in the fight against climate change. It has set ambitious, economy-wide emission reduction targets and mandated that all of the state’s electricity come from carbon-free sources by 2045.

These are aggressive goals, befitting the clout and resolve of the world’s 5th largest economy. Yet, we continue to see rising temperatures, record drought and intense wildfires.

What if everything California and the nation is doing to slow climate change just isn’t enough?

Proposed ballot measure would fast-track construction of dams, desalination plants and other water projects – California

California has not built enough new reservoirs, desalination plants and other water projects because there are too many delays, too many lawsuits and too much red tape.

That’s the message from a growing coalition of Central Valley farmers and Southern California desalination supporters who have begun collecting signatures for a statewide ballot measure that would fast-track big water projects and provide billions of dollars to fund them — potentially setting up a major political showdown with environmentalists next year shaped by the state’s ongoing drought.

BMC sets the ball rolling for first desalination plant – Mumbai – India

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has set the ball rolling for the construction of the city’s first desalination plant, which will convert sea water to drinking water.

The civic body has decided to appoint consultants for vetting of designs for the 200 million litres per day (MLD) desalination plant in the western suburbs.

Construction should start next year and the plant is expected to be functional in the next 4 years. The BMC anticipates the construction cost to be â‚č18,000 crore.

Sindh to install desalination plant on Karachi coastline – Pakistan

The Sindh government is planning to build a desalination plant to overcome water scarcity for residents of Karachi.

Addressing a dialogue at the Institute of Business Administration on “Karachi: The way forward”, the city’s administrator, Murtaza Wahab, said the Ibrahim Hyderi coastal area of the city has been chosen to implement the proposed project of desalination plant.

New Mexico city moves ahead with desalination project – New Mexico

The Eunice City Council recently voted to have a Hobbs-based engineering firm continue studying the benefits of building a desalination plant for the community.

As depletion of fresh water from the Ogallala Aquifer continues, the council wants to know the feasibility of a proposed alternative — desalination of saline or brackish water.

The Hobbs News-Sun reported that it could cost about $5.5 million to build a plant and the completion of the engineering study likely will provide a more accurate estimate.

Should California’s last nuclear power plant stay open? – California

Keeping the last remaining nuclear power plant in California open can help the state achieve its climate goals and save money to boot, according to a 114-page assessmentcompiled by a joint study team from Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

But Pacific Gas & Electric, the operator of the Diablo Canyon Power Plant, says it still plans to close the facility starting in three years, and longtime critics of nuclear power remain firmly opposed to any talk of extending the life of the power plant that overlooks the Pacific in central California.

How Cape Town avoided a devastating water crisis at the last minute – Cape Town

After three consecutive years with a dry winter, Cape Town faced a water crisis that was so severe, its municipal authorities began bracing for Day Zero – the day they would have to shut down the city’s water supply, and residents would be forced to line up for daily water rations of 50 litres per person.

That level of conservation is foreign to most people in urban regions.

For instance, an average person in the US goes through 303 to 378 litres of water in a day, according [

Reservoirs full but Chennai still buys water – India

Heavy rains have kept Thervoy Kandigai reservoir brimming since Sunday. In fact, it’s been filled to capacity multiple times since it was commissioned last November. But not a drop from the waterbody — built at a cost of Rs 380 crore to augment Chennai’s drinking water supply — has been used.

That’s because the city’s other reservoirs (Chembarambakkam, Poondi, Red Hills and Cholavaram) already have enough water, says a senior official from the CMWSSB.

But water is still being bought from desalination plants to meet the city’s needs. On [
