Alfanar to build 110 MW of solar for desalination plant – Saudi Arabia

Alfanar has revealed plans to set up a ground-mounted PV project to provide power to the Al Jubail 2 water desalination plant on the east coast of Saudi Arabia. It will require an investment of SAR 1.2 billion ($319 million).

The Jubail plant is one of the largest desalination plants in the world, with a production capacity of 1 million cubic meters of water per day. PV is expected to provide electricity to the plant at a lower consumption rate of 2.16 kWh/m3.

Saudi Arabia’s cumulative installed PV capacity reached 439 MW [

Albufeira set to be chosen as site for desalination plant – Portugal

Regional water company Águas do Algarve has already confirmed that it will increase the volume of treated wastewater meant to be reused to eight million cubic metres by the end of 2025.

“We visited a (desalination) plant in Alicante (Spain) where the brine is released hundreds of metres away from a protected marine area which is closely followed by the European community and by several environmental ONGs and things have gone well,” he said.

KENYA: Boreal Light equips 28 hospitals with solar-powered desalination systems – East Africa

German start-up Boreal Light has just delivered 28 solar-powered desalination systems to Kenya. The systems are intended for hospitals treating daily Covid-19 cases in the coastal region of the country, as well as Turkana and Nakuru counties.

In addition to the supply of drinking water, Boreal Light’s objective is to contribute to the fight against Covid-19 in Kenyan hospitals by providing enough water for sanitation, including hand washing. According to Andrew Tuimur, just 22.8% of Kenyans have limited sanitation services and 40% use unimproved services.

Saudi Arabia’s SWCC awards Alfanar deal to construct 110MW solar park for desalination plant – KSA

The Saline Water Conversion Corp. has awarded Alfanar a 110 MW solar photovoltaic power plant project, which will be a part of a floating solar panel system. The project, expected to cost $330mn, also includes a 380 kV substation and 172 kms of overhead transmission lines.

The solar plant will play a critical role in powering the desalination plant with renewable energy, thereby reducing the use of 410,000 barrels of crude oil per year.

This is expected to result in the cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 155 megatonnes annually and reducing [

Orange County Desalination Plant Wins Key Approval – USA

A desalination plant is moving forward in Orange County with California Coastal Commission approval just a few months after another, uch more expensive project, failed the same test.

Some of the experts that testified at the CCC hearing on the Doheny plant called comparisons between the two projects “ludicrous.” The Doheny plant will only cost $140 million, rather than $1.4 billion, for example. The Poseidon project was also located in Central Orange County, which is located on top of a large underground aquifer.
