Abengoa starts producing drinking water at Jazlah desalination plant (Jubail 3A) – Saudi Arabia

The plant has started producing drinking water at 25 % of its capacity and is successfully meeting the quality parameters specified in the contract.

It will have a total capacity of 600,000 m3/day, the same as Rabigh 3, the largest desalination plant in commercial operation using reverse osmosis technology in Saudi Arabia, also developed by Abengoa.

It will also be the world’s largest desalination plant to be partially powered by solar photovoltaic renewable energy.

Water board set to vote on desalination plant – Mexico

A source with knowledge of the proposal said the proposed desalination plant would be located on the Sea of Cortez in Mexico and the water would be pumped to Arizona, not traded in exchange for more Colorado River water as has been previously speculated. The proposal includes a first phase providing an estimated 300,000 acre-feet of water with two possible additional phases, the source said. The project, which would require federal approval, would also utilize solar power.

The novel desalination technologies making potable water more accessible

This ‘solar distiller‘ utilizes a slowly rotating cylinder by a solar-powered DC motor and, upon testing a prototype, could achieve up to 400 percent more power efficiency than traditional devices.

A novel desalination membrane:

Researchers from the University of Jordan, Arab Open University, and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology designed a method that enables evaporation and, therefore, desalination at ambient temperatures of [about] 25 degrees celsius (°C). Thus not requiring heating or high pressure as costly comparable devices do.

Chinese desalter picked for Algeria’s next big project – Algeria

Algeria has continued its somewhat unorthodox approach to major desalination planning this week, awarding a $126.9 million contract for the design, supply and commissioning of the 300,000m3/d Cap Blanc SWRO desalination plant to China’s Hangzhou Water Treatment Technology (HWTT).

Iraq to build water desalination system in Al-Muthanna Governorate – Iran

The project design is expected to have a capacity of 1,500 m3.

Construction work includes the implementation of networks, conveyor lines, distribution networks and household connections. This will contribute to the provision of potable water and the elimination of water scarcity in the areas of Al-Khader and Al-Darraji and their neighboring villages.

Arizona Advances $5.5B Mexico Desalination Plant Proposal – Arizona, US

Arizona officials voted to advance a $5.5-billion project to build a water desalination plant, 200-mile pipeline and associated infrastructure as part of a plan to address drought-driven water uncertainty in the state. But growing controversy around the plan and the method of implementation threatens to derail the proposal.

IDE says the plant could supply up to 3 million households—more than the 2.6 million households currently in Arizona. The plant would initially supply less water per year, about 300,000 acre-ft, according to the company.

Aboitiz, Keppel units eye desalination project in Cebu – Philippines

AIC has submitted an unsolicited proposal to supply the Metro Cebu Water District (MWCD) with 30 million liters per day of desalinated bulk water. It intends to utilize Keppel Infrastructure’s expertise and technologies in building and operating a desalination plant in the province wherein raw saltwater will be treated using the reverse osmosis water treatment technology to produce safe drinking water.

Drought-hit Jordan to build Red Sea desalination plant – Jordan

Jordan said Sunday it plans to build a Red Sea desalination plant operating within five years, to provide the mostly-desert and drought-hit kingdom with critical drinking water.

The plant is expected to produce 250-300 million cubic meters of potable water per year, and should be ready for operation in 2025 or 2026, Salameh said.

“It will cover the need for drinking water (in Jordan) for the next two centuries,” he said, adding that the desalinated water would be piped from Aqaba on the Red Sea to the rest of the country.
