South Koreaâs LG Chem Ltd. will produce seawater desalination materials in Saudi Arabia starting in 2026.
The company announced Wednesday that it has signed an agreement with Saudi Arabiaâs Al Khorayef Group to localize production of reverse osmosis (RO) membranes.
The pipeline, which runs alongside Airport Drive and the Alexandra Canal, transports up to 250 million litres of desalinated drinking water from SDPâs Plant in Kurnell to Sydney Waterâs Erskineville supply network so it can be distributed across the city.
The research team led by Zhang Xuan, a professor at the Nanjing University of Science and Technology, developed the polyester reverse osmosis membrane, which overcame several limitations of mainstream commercial polyamide membranes, providing a new solution for the next generation of seawater desalination technology.
Itâs among the points more hotly contended between opponents and supporters of the proposed project, which would in its initial phase have the capacity to generate as much as 30 million gallons of treated water per day.
The 250l/s reverse osmosis plant went to a consortium comprising La Peninsular CompañĂa Constructora and Acciona Agua, which has a 25-year concession to design, build and operate it. Another contract for the integral improvement of the distribution system went to a consortium comprising FCC Aqualia and Aqualia MĂ©xico for 1.3bn pesos, which now holds a 10-year concession to improve, operate and maintain the system.Â
Barcelona already relies on Europeâs largest desalination plant for domestic use to compensate over three years of below average rainfall that have led to a historic drought made worse by climate change. In February, Cataloniaâs regional government declared a drought emergency for much of the surrounding region.
PERTH, Australia â Jacobs (NYSE: J), a global provider of technical, professional, and construction services, has been contracted by Water Corporation to spearhead the Alkimos Seawater Desalination Plant in Perth. The initiative is set to enhance the drinking water supply infrastructure for over 2.5 million residents in Western Australia.

TNPA has awarded the joint venture, Norland Civil Engineers and Contractors and Impact Water Solutions (PTY) Ltd (IWS), trading as Sun Water East London, a R60-million contract to construct and operate the solar-powered water desalination plant over seven years.
The ceremony was attended by Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Etihad Water and Electricity, along with Yousef Ahmed Al Ali, CEO of the company, and several senior officials.
