Chilean miner Antofagasta Minerals on Thursday inaugurated a more than $2 billion desalination plant for its flagship copper mine in Chile, Los Pelambres, aimed at relieving the effects of severe drought that has hit production.

A non-profit organisation, XPRIZE designs and hosts public competitions intended to encourage technological development. With US$119m in the prize pot, competing teams have been tasked to develop new desalination methods and materials that can produce clean water more sustainably and affordably. Â
With a capacity of 150 million gallons of desalinated water per day, the plant operates according to the independent producer system.

The Complex is one of the key pillars for supplying Dubai with electricity and water services, adhering to the highest standards of availability, reliability, and quality. DEWA had awarded the implementation of the AED897 million plant, with a production capacity of 40 million Imperial Gallons per Day (MIGD) of desalinated water, to a consortium led by Spainâs Acciona Agua and Belhasa Six Construct (BeSIX).
Algerian Irrigation Minister Taha Derbal, who visited one of the projects on Sunday, announced that all the plants would be completed by the end of 2024.
