CDT Structure

Starting 01.01.2025, the framework is transition to CDT-24, introducing new advancements and integrating emerging technologies while expanding on the foundational principles established in CDT-14.

The CDT framework in its CDT-24 version, is organized into four hierarchical levels:

  1. Phase Classification: Differentiates between transient and stable phase processes.
  2. Separation Processes: Categorizes various methods of separating impurities from water.
  3. Main Technologies: Highlights primary desalination techniques.
  4. Advanced Sub-technologies: Focuses on specialized, cutting-edge processes.

Current Dominant Technologies

Among the technologies classified under the third level of CDT, the most prominent are:

  1. Multi-Stage Flash (MSF): A thermal-based method relying on successive stages of evaporation and condensation.
  2. Reverse Osmosis (RO): A membrane-driven process that separates impurities under high pressure.

CDT-24 update is providing a more refined classification for these and other technologies.


Types of Desalination Technologies

Desalination methods are broadly categorized into:

  1. Membrane-based Technologies:
    • Reverse Osmosis (RO)
    • Nanofiltration (NF)
  2. Thermal-based Technologies:
    • Multi-Stage Flash (MSF)
    • Multiple Effect Distillation (MED)

The CDT-24 update is enhance these categorizations, incorporating additional sub-technologies and addressing the latest innovations.


Conclusion

The CDT-14 framework, encompassing 51 distinct desalination technologies, served for 10 years now as a cornerstone for advancing water purification methods. With water scarcity emerging as a critical global issue, the transition to CDT-24 and currently 53 desalination technologies reflects a commitment to continuous improvement, ensuring sustainable access to clean water for future generations.
