Weeks 1 and 2, 2025 The global desalination industry has witnessed a dynamic start to the year, with notable developments in the economic, scientific, and political spheres. These events highlight the ongoing evolution of desalination technologies and their increasing significance in addressing water scarcity worldwide. 1. Economy 2. Science & Research 3. Politics Outlook As we move into week 3 of 2025, the desalination industry is set to focus on key conferences addressing sustainable practices and the integration of artificial intelligence in plant operations. Stay tuned for insights into these pivotal developments.
Microbial desalination technology offers a promising platform for salt removal processes and for the recovery of ionic compounds. In terms of operation, systems without potential control (microbial desalination cell, MDC) and applying anode potential control (microbial electrolysis desalination cell, MEDC) can be primarily implemented. In this study, a comparative assessment of the different operational modes is carried out by using acetate-fed mixed culture MDC and MEDC reactors for NaCl removal (with 35 g L−1 initial concentration) in three-chamber setup. Desalination efficiency, kinetics, as well as the occurring electrochemical losses are evaluated. In addition, ion exchange membrane (IEM) performance and stability are addressed. […]
The City of Cape Town aims to start construction of a permanent desalination plant in Paarden Eiland in 2026 with the aim of having it operational by 2030 if the plan receives all the necessary regulatory approvals. This is according to a draft scoping report prepared by Cape Town-based engineering firm Zutari, which was appointed to do the necessary environmental impact assessments of the proposed desalination plant. Extensive research on horizontal tube falling film evaporation in desalination has been conducted on flow modes, flow and heat transfer characteristics and enhanced heat transfer structures. Studies on the flow modes have found that the heat transfer rate of the droplet mode is was markedly greater than that of the column mode and sheet mode due to the effects of thinning liquid film and increasing interface area in the droplet falling film evaporation. The current measures to attain droplet falling film evaporation on smooth horizontal tubes involve reducing its flow density to the extent that the reduced flow density is […]
VA Tech Wabag on September 6, 2024, had announced an order from the Saudi Water Authority for ₹2,700 crore ($317 million) towards a 300 MLD Mega Sea Water Desalination Plant in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which now stands cancelled. „With reference to our above intimation dated September 06, 2024, relating to the 300 MLD Mega Sea Water Desalination Plant Order in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, we hereby inform that the Customer has notified all tender participants on December 16, 2024, that the said tender stands cancelled pursuant to their internal administrative procedures,“ the company informed via an exchange […]
One of the most prominent and highly valued characteristics of the electrically-driven flow-electrode deionization (e-FCDI) unit, such as those shown in Figs. 1(a-b), is its success in harnessing two processes: electrodialysis and continuous flowable-electrode’s ions trapping and subsequent electrode regeneration. This has resulted in a wide range of technological applications, including desalination, energy storage, scale control, nutrient removal and recovery, pollutant management, heavy metal treatment, and water softening. Essential components of such an e-FCDI unit are the two ion-exchange membranes (IEMs), each of which is a polymer matrix with specifically-designed pores, channels, or pathways that allow the migration of ions […]
Perhaps the greatest novelty of Sunday was the fact that this government is indeed looking into the possibility of a water highway south – in this case, using the massive Alqueva reservoir in the Alentejo as the source. Water highways are a ‘moot point’, in that some environmentalists argue vehemently against them, suggesting they carry too many environmental costs, and are not, effectively, doing anything to boost water supplies (they are simply moving water around). Equally, some engineers and academics champion the concept of water highways, particularly from the north (which often has too much water). Indeed, a pipeline connecting […]
We focus on the key characteristics required for chlorine-resistant seawater RO membranes, and acid/base-resistant NF membranes for wastewater fractionation. We also highlight the impetus to focus on how TFC membranes can be used for resource recovery applications, such as the extraction of valuable ions from wastewater and brines. (Source)
