Prime Minister Dr. Mohammad Ishtayyeh, the Consul General of France, the EU Representative, and the AFD Country Director together with the Head of the Palestinian Water Authority, Hebron Governor and representatives of the local community laid the corner stone for the Hebron Regional Waste Water Treatment Plant in Hebron.

At completion, the plant will serve around 400,000 people living in Hebron City and along Wadi As-Samen in Hebron Governorate and will pave the way to treated water reuse for agricultural purpose.

Large-scale desalination plants, funded by international donors and private businesses struggling to mitigate the crisis, are in full swing in the besieged Palestinian enclave.

But a new high-tech effort is coming from an unlikely source: a company based in Israel.

Average Palestinian consumes 87 litres of water per day – Palestine

The Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS), the Palestinian Water Authority (PWA) and the Palestinian Meteorological Department have disclosed that the average Palestinian consumes 87.3 litres of water per day.

This rate has reached 90.5 litres per day in the West Bank, according to joint statistics issued by the three institutions, while recording an improvement in recent years following the completion of water projects that have been able to boost the water resources and reduce waste.

World Bank to invest $117 million in water for the Gaza Strip – Palestine

The World Bank announced on Monday that it will grant US$15 million for a water desalination program for the Gaza Strip.

The new project was founded with the aim of improving the quality and quantity of water in Gaza, and will have additional funds of US$42 million from other donors.

Another US$60 million will be handed over by the Kuwait fund for Arab Economic development.

There is no simple narrative about water and sanitation in the State of Palestine. It’s one about Gaza, the West Bank, and multiple contexts within each. But for a child – or a family — it’s access to safe water and sanitation that ultimately matters.

That’s why, after three years working in the State of Palestine, I wanted to reflect on the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) story and what UNICEF and partners are doing within the complex challenges.

EU and UNICEF inaugurate Gaza’s largest seawater desalination plant

GAZA, 19 January 2017 – Today the European Union and UNICEF officially inaugurated the largest seawater desalination plant built in the Gaza Strip so far.

The €10 million plant, funded by the European Union, has the capacity of producing 6,000 m3 of potable water daily to provide around 75,000 Palestinians with safe drinking water in the southern Gaza Strip—about 35,000 people in Khan Younis and 40,000 people in Rafah.
