Manori desalination plant will help us save 4 lakh trees: BMC – Mumbai

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation seems to be inclined towards the desalination plant more than Garagi dam, despite criticism of its high production cost.

The reservoir project had been pushed strongly under the Devendra Fadnavis government, hoever, the BMC has set it aside and for all the right reasons.

The Manori desalination plant will provide the city with only 200 million litres of water per day, half of the dam’s expected output.

‘No dam needed if desalination unit at Manori gets off ground’ – India

MUMBAI: The proposed 200 million litre daily desalination plant at Manori will do away with the need to construct the Gargai-Pinjal dam and help save three lakh trees that may have to be cut for the dam project, said additional municipal commissioner (projects) P Velarasu on Tuesday.

Velarasu further said while the decision to not construct the dam will be taken at the chief minister’s level, the desalination plant provides an “excellent alternative” to the large dam project which would be environmentally more harmful, requiring submergence of land and forests.

Mumbai civic body’s desalination plant project: Why not focus on water conservation, ask experts – India

Even as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to revive its decade-old proposal to develop a desalination plant in the city to convert seawater into potable water, experts have said that the issue has brought back focus on the need for water conservation by way of harvesting and fixing leakages on Mumbai’s 6,000-km-long pipeline network.

Ten days ago, Maharashtra environment minister Aaditya Thackeray had given his nod to BMC for preparing a feasibility report to revive the civic body’s plan for a desalination plant.

E coli count along Mumbai’s coastline on the mend but still above permissible limits – Mumbai – India

Bacteria count along Mumbai’s coastline is decreasing gradually but remains way above the permissible limits.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s recent Environment Status Report (ESR), 2019-20, states that E coli (or Escherichia coli), which can cause anything from dysentery to meningitis if ingested, continues to have a high count along the city’s coastline.

While a safe E coli count is 100 colony forming units (CFU) per 100 millilitres (ml) of water, in Bandra the bacteria has been recorded at 500 CFU — the highest in the city.
