Construction on nuclear plants to be sped up – Iran

Iran is going to ramp-up construction work on two of its new nuclear power projects in Bushehr.

Ali Akbar Salehi, Vice President of Iran and head of Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran (AEOI) said that construction of two new nuclear power plants in Bushehr will be sped up.

The Iranian Central Bank is going to allocate the first installment of the budget in two weeks, he added.

‘Small fire’ put out at Oman’s Barka 2 water plant – Barka – Oman

A “small fire” broke out at Oman’s Barka 2 water desalination plant over the weekend, operator SMN Power Holding confirmed.

The fire started in the low-voltage (LV) switchgear room of the plant, which has since halted operations.

No injuries were caused due to the fire, nor were any hazardous substances released. Civil defence authorities extinguished the fire with powder and carbon dioxide.

NAB takes notice of dysfunctional desalination plants – Pakistan

Taking cognisance of three dysfunctional desalination plants in Pasni, Jewani and Gadani, National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Balochistan Director General Mirza Muhammad Irfan Baig has issued notices to the Balochistan Development Authority (BDA) and others responsible.

BDA had initiated three different projects in Pasni, Jiwani and Dam Jati at a cost of Rs1 billion to address water shortage in the areas, but despite a passage of 12 years the desalination plants are not operational.

Finnish group Pöyry secures Saudi water project deal – Shuqaiq – Saudi Arabia.

Pöyry, an international consulting and engineering company, said it has secured the owner’s engineer services contract from the Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) for the Shuqaiq Phase 3 Water Transmission System project in Saudi Arabia.

The scope of work includes review of contractor’s engineering services and supervision of construction, erection and commissioning, said a statement from Pöyry.

More than 2 mln cubic meters of desalinated water for pilgrims – Riyadh – Saudi Arabia

Saudi National Water Company (NWC) has announced its readiness to provide pilgrims at the holy sites with the necessary amounts of desalinated water as part of its preparations to provide relief to worshipers.

According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the company did visual presentation on its readiness on the seventh day of Hajj this year, reviewing its operational capacity.

Red tide disrupts operation of desalination plant in Barka – Barka – Oman

A red tide outbreak in Barka has forced ACWA Power to operate two of its water desalination plants below their capacity, resulting in a financial impact of RO140,000 to the company.

The company expects further delay in reverting to full operations as proliferation of Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB) is continuing, which is likely to increase the financial impact of the outbreak.

Acciona wins Saudi desalination project.-Saudi

Acciona Agua is to design and build what will be one of Saudi Arabia’s largest desalination plants.

The €200m+ plant will have a production capacity of 210,000m3 per day.

Saudi government corporation Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) is client for the Al Khobar desalination plant, which will be built in Khobar, on the country’s east coast, about 400km from Riyadh. It will also supply water to oil company Aramco.

Japanese players enter debut facility in Oman.-Japan

A project to build a seawater desalination plant in Oman has secured US$114mn from a number of Japanese banks with cover from Japan’s export credit agency

Nexi.MUFG Bank, SMBC and Shinsei Bank will extend the loan to the Al Asilah Desalination Company in the form of project finance.

Currently under design, the project is expected to launch operations in 2021.

Thereafter it will sell approximately 80,000mÂł desalinated water a day for over 20 years to the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company, the single buyer of power and water for all IPP/IWPP projects within the Sultanate of Oman.

Saudi PIF takes key stake in Acwa Power.

Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) has acquired a significant stake in the International Company For Water And Power Projects (Acwa Power), a leading developer, owner, and operator of power generation and water desalination plants.

As a result of the investment, PIF will become a 15.2 per cent direct shareholder in Acwa Power and, by taking into account the 9.78 per cent ownership of its wholly-owned subsidiary Sanabil Direct Investments Company, PIF’s total shareholding directly and indirectly represents a 24.98 per cent equity interest in Acwa Power, a statement said.
