As I sat under the welcome shade of a cluster of palm trees, my gaze drifted over the calm waters of the lagoon ahead of me – and was caught by a line of neatly labelled terracotta rubbish bins.

To be honest, when I’d imagined my trip to Egypt’s Red Sea region, I’d pictured swimming in warm, crystal-clear waters and discovering vibrant coral reefs surrounded by brightly coloured fish.

And though I was able to do all of that, it was not the marine beauty that captivated me the most, but rather El Gouna’s impressive commitment to sustainability. Instead of detracting from the natural beauty of the Egyptian resort town, the rubbish bins were a welcome sight.

In Egypt, resort of Soma Bay is now powered by solar energy. A clean solar energy plant was recently commissioned by Taqa Arabia, a Cairo-based company.

Inauguration ceremony was attended by officials from Taqa Arabia, which owns the solar power plant, as well as Ibrahim El-Missiri, the chairman and CEO of (ASDC).

Solar power plant, which has a capacity of 5 MWp, was built by Taqa Power, the subsidiary of Taqa Arabia Group. The clean electricity is sold to ASDC under a 30-year power purchase agreement.

“Our main objective is to generate the required energy using solar to reduce electricity and seawater desalination costs.

This project aligns with Egypt’s vision to explore and diversify the country’s energy resources,” says Ibrahim El-Missiri.

An Egyptian delegation of water treatment experts visited Iraq this month for talks with Iraqi officials on addressing an acute water crisis in the Arab country.

The Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources said June 20 that the Egyptian delegation discussed a proposal for building a water desalination plant on the Euphrates River.

The station will be used to purify and desalinate seawater to help ease water shortages in southern Iraq.
