Lecture EPC UNI Dresden 2023

On February 3rd, 2023, Claus Mertes gave two successful lectures on the topic of „EPC in for desalination projects in practice“ at the University of Dresden. The lectures were well attended and received positive feedback from the students and faculty.

Claus Mertes is an expert in the field of desalination and has extensive experience in managing EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) projects. During his lectures, he shared his practical insights and real-world examples to help the students understand the various aspects of EPC in desalination projects.

The students were especially impressed by Claus’s in-depth knowledge and practical approach to the topic. They appreciated the hands-on examples he used to illustrate the concepts, and his ability to simplify complex ideas made the material easily accessible to everyone in the audience.

Qatar University (QU) published the first book in the Gulf region on Reverse Osmosis (RO) desalination.

‚Reverse Osmosis Systems: Design, Optimisation and Troubleshooting Guide‘, is published by Elsevier, the largest science publisher.
Available online, the book is authored by Prof. Syed Javaid Zaidi, and co-authored with Haleema Saleem from the Center for Advanced Materials (CAM), QU.
Water security has been identified as one of the Grand Challenges of Qatar National Vision 2030.
“The book is an essential reference for professionals, researchers, and students in environmental engineering practices and related fields. It is also a helpful tool for managers and official decision-makers that face water scarcity issues worldwide.” said Prof. Mariam al-Maadeed, vice president for Research and Graduate Studies at QU.
„The book is timely as Qatar’s desalination industry shifts from thermal-based to membrane based RO technology and will help develop technological solutions and enhance production”, noted Dr Mohamed Irshidat, acting director of CAM, which has been engaged in cutting-edge research in nanomaterials for energy and environment.
CAM supports local oil and gas, desalination and water treatment, processing industries as well as the Qatari society. The materials research contributes to economic progress by developing advanced materials for new technologies and enhancing the performance of established technologies.

Wasserversorger versuchen bereits heute, das Wasser mit unterschiedlichen Maßnahmen zu schützen, indem sie die darüber liegenden Flächen selbst pachten, Brunnen verlagern oder belastetes mit unbelastetem Wasser mischen. Auch diese Kosten fließen bereits heute in den Trinkwasserpreis mit ein.

Doch derartige Maßnahmen werden in Zukunft in hochbelasteten Regionen nicht ausreichen, um den Nitratwert im Trinkwasser niedrig zu halten. Die UBA-Studie hat dies mit Daten von und in Kooperation mit drei großen Wasserversorgern untersucht: OOWV (Oldenburgisch-Ostfriesischer Wasserverband), Rheinenergie und RWW (Rheinisch-Westfälische Wasserwerksgesellschaft). Ergebnis: In einigen Gebieten könnte bald der Fall eintreten, dass das Wasser zusätzlich gereinigt werden muss. Dazu gibt es unterschiedliche Verfahren: Elektrodialyse, Umkehrosmose, biologische Denitrifikation oder das CARIX-Verfahren. Welches Verfahren zur Anwendung kommen kann, wird durch lokale Faktoren wie der Wasserhärte oder der notwendigen Vor- oder Nachbehandlung des Wassers bestimmt.
