BMC Plans Upgrade For Colaba Sewage Treatment Plant After Desalination Fails To Attract Bidders - India

he BMC is shifting its focus to upgrading the Colaba Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in Mumbai after its previous attempt to build a desalination plant failed to attract bidders. Currently, the treated water from this STP is used for non-potable purposes such as gardening, road cleaning, and vehicle washing.

However, BMC plans to enhance the plant’s capacity to 15 million liters per day (MLD) and convert it into an advanced tertiary plant. This upgrade will enable the plant to treat sewage water, making it safe for drinking.

Every year, the city’s reliance on its seven lakes for drinking water causes concern during the monsoon. To improve the water supply, the BMC revived its plan for a desalination plant with a capacity of 200 MLD, which could later be expanded to 400 MLD, to be located in Manori, Malad.

However, after failing to attract bidders despite extending the deadline multiple times over the past year, the BMC has scrapped the tender process and rolled back the proposal. Instead of inviting a fresh tender, the civic body has now shifted its focus to upgrading its sewage treatment plants (STPs).

Metrowater to start replacing portion of reverse osmosis membranes in Nemmeli desalination plant by December – India

Chennai Metrowater is set to replace reverse osmosis (RO) membranes at the desalination plant in Nemmeli. The work is likely to start by the second week of December.

The desalination plant has a capacity to treat 110 million litres of seawater a day (mld). Currently, the plant produces nearly 60 mld of drinking water, which is supplied to the southern parts of the city. RO membranes are a crucial component in producing quality freshwater. The plant has 7,056 RO membranes, which are used for converting seawater into freshwater.

Maintaining quality

Every year, at least 15% of the membranes are replaced to maintain the quality of the drinking water produced at the plant. The membranes are imported from the U.S. Earlier, 1,060 RO membranes were changed at the plant.

The work to replace the RO membranes would not affect the water treatment quality as the remaining membranes would be put to use.

Water production at the plant is limited to 60 mld to match the withdrawal rate from other sources, particularly from reservoirs, for water supply in the city.

Water Crisis in Crete Hits Critical Levels

A striking example of the crisis is Lake Kournas near Georgioupoli in Chania, where water levels have dropped significantly to 2.2 metres from a maximum average of 7.5 metres. Aris Papadogiannis, CEO of the Development Organisation of Crete, expressed concern in an interview with ERT Chania. He remarked, “Lake Kournas has never been in such a state. This recurring hydrological deficiency over two years has drastically affected the local flora and fauna.”
