Three locations still being studied for future Costa del Sol desalination plant as draft plan deadline slips - Spain

The future desalination plant in the Axarquía area to the east of Malaga province is still in the hands of bureaucratic procedures which continue to delay the project, for which 100 million euros have been budgeted by Spain’s central government. After it was announced last June that the project could be drafted by the end of the year, this deadline has now been extended by a few more months, until spring 2025.

Thermal seawater desalination for irrigation purposes in a water-stressed region: Emerging value tensions in full-scale implementation

Water scarcity in arid regions has accelerated the adoption of desalination technologies, yet these often carry high energy costs and environmental impacts, particularly due to brine discharge.

This study examines societal concerns and conflicts linked to developing a solar-powered thermal desalination system for irrigation in Spain’s water-stressed Almería region, aiming for resource recovery and circular water economy.

Through a context-sensitive, participatory design, technical scenarios were evaluated alongside stakeholder feedback, highlighting the need for sustainable, socially accepted desalination solutions that balance environmental, economic, and social considerations.

The Axarquía desalination plant, costing 100 million euros, is set to split its output equally between agriculture and domestic supply. Managed by the state-owned Acuamed, the project advances largely due to user-driven demand rather than governmental speed, with 2028 as the earliest anticipated commissioning date. The Junta de Andalucía and Vélez-Málaga town hall have proposed a site near the coast, though expropriation is required from six landowners. Once operational, the plant will supply 12 cubic hectometres per year each for agricultural and household use, vital for addressing the region’s ongoing drought challenges.

Acciona’s 3D Printing Initiatives

3D printing has revolutionized various industries by enabling the production of complex structures with minimal waste. Acciona has recognized the potential of this technology in construction and water infrastructure projects. The company has been using 3D printing to create custom components for desalination plants and other infrastructure, reducing both costs and environmental impact.
