Kingdom Mulls Modernisation of Desalination Plants – Saudi Arabia

He said that Saudi Arabia is the largest producer of desalinated water in the world producing three million cubic metres daily.

“Desalinated water accounts for 55 to 60 per cent of water supplied for public consumption,” he said at a graduation ceremony held at the training center for the Saline Water Conversion Corporation, or SWCC, in Jubail.

Referring to the ministry’s efforts to reduce consumption of water and prevent leakages, he said that these efforts would help save about 600,000 cubic metres of water daily.

Dubai’s Hassyan power plant to be fuelled by natural gas to reduce emissions – United Arab Emirates

Dubai’s Hassyan power complex will be converted into a natural gas plant as the emirate seeks to reduce emissions and become carbon neutral in the next three decades.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed, chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, approved the conversion of the 2,400-megawatt plant, which used clean coal, said the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority on Thursday.

“This step supports Dubai’s energy supply security by diversifying the energy mix through the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050,” Sheikh Ahmed said.

Taweelah RO, the world’s largest RO water desalination plant, will begin early commercial operations in the first quarter of 2022, by providing 100 million gallons per day (MGD), said the Chief Executive Officer of the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC).

In a statement to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), Othman Al Ali said that the plant will commence full commercial operations by the end of this year, providing 200 MGD.

Morocco switches on desalination plant to supply Agadir residents, farmers – Morocco

Morocco has switched on its largest desalination plant in Chtouka Aitbaha, worth $470 million, to serve the water stressed area of Agadir and the farms in its south, the agriculture ministry said.

The plant will have a daily capacity of 400,000 cubic meters of desalinated water and will help save underground water resources.

Nearly 15,000 hectares will now be irrigated by the plant instead of the scarce groundwater resources.
