Samsung C&T bags US$2.8bn Qatar power and desalination plant project – South Korea

The contractor said it had received a letter of award for the Qatar Facility E Independent Water and Power Production Project last month.

The project involves the construction of the a 2,415MW power plant, combined with a 110 MGID (millions of gallons of water per day) desalination plant and is worth US$2.84 billion.

Samsung C&T was awarded the project after a consortium of Japanese and Korean power companies jointly won the rights to develop the facility for Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa).

Saudi Arabia revolutionises desalination efficiency and bolsters water sustainability by 80% – KSA

Text copieSaudi Arabia has made strides in water desalination, improving efficiency by 80 per cent and slashing costs by 50 per cent in recent years, according to Mansour bin Hilal Al-Mushaiti, the Kingdom’s Deputy Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture.

Daily desalination output has surged to 6 million cubic metres, contributing to a total capacity of 11.3 million cubic metres. This leap forward has been made possible by expanding water transmission networks, now spanning over 14,000 km, equivalent to double the length of the Nile River, overcoming challenging terrains to deliver water nationwide.

Green light for South Australian desalination – Australia

The South Australian Government has approved plans to build a new desalination plant at Billy Lights Point on the Eyre Peninsula.

The State Government said that Eyre Peninsula’s future water security is at serious risk with water levels running low in the region’s underground aquifers.

There are approximately 35,000 SA Water customers on the Eyre Peninsula, with around 75 per cent of the region’s drinking water sourced from these groundwater basins.

Plans for the project were recommended for approval by the State Commission Assessment Panel and were subsequently approved […]

Facile constructing ZrO2 nanoparticles equipped with high conductivity carbon networks as pseudocapacitive anodes for removing phosphorus – China

Capacitive deionization (CDI) displays the merits of having eco-friendliness and low energy consumption when capturing phosphorus. However, traditional carbon electrodes often suffer from the limitation that phosphorus uptake sites are insufficient.

Herein, a novel ZrO2 nanoparticle equipped with a highly conductive carbon network (NZrC) was fabricated by a facile co-pyrolysis process. Na2EDTA can provide additional carbon backbones, N species, and metal chelation sites. Zr-MOF was applied as the ZrO2 precursor with abundant phosphorus trapping sites. The results suggested that Na2EDTA favors improving the ZrO2 dispersion, mesoporous channel formation, and pseudocapacitive behavior.

Synthesizing high performance robust PSf loose nanofiltration membranes through nanobubble-assisted pore-forming – China

By leveraging nano-bubbles produced through the reaction between AC and NaOH without adding other pore-forming agents, the membrane-forming process of PSf was regulated.

It was found that the PSf LNF membranes prepared in NaOH-solution coagulation and immersion baths exhibited significantly enhanced permeation performance without compromising the rejection. These results suggested that the coagulation and immersion post-treatment processes under NaOH solution had a great effect upon the structure and the property of the membranes.

The LNF membrane prepared from 20 wt% PSf casting solution with 8 wt% AC achieved a permeation flux of 188.7 L m−2 h−1, […]

Assessment of a pilot continuous freezing desalination system with vacuum-assisted brine extraction – Egypt

The proposed pilot FD unit has multiple brine extraction stages to reach the desired water salinity.

Four distinct feed water salinity are tested. The results show that the unit has the potential to produce low-salinity water without the need for washing or crushing which causes significant mass loss. The results indicate that water is obtained at a salinity of 393 and 1225 ppm NaCl at feed water salinities equal 10,000 and 40,000 ppm NaCl, respectively.

Furthermore, the system produces an approximate constant volume equal 850 mL which is around 28 […]

Preparation of fully coated PEDOT: PSS film on MXene for high reliability capacitive deionization – China

In this paper, the sandwich PEDOT:PSS@MXene film electrode was prepared by uniformly coating PEDOT:PSS film on the surface of MXene through template-assisted polymerization. The film improves the stability of the composite by protecting the Ti layer.

The specific capacitance of PEDOT:PSS@MXene performs 185.5 F g−1 at 5 mV s−1. The desalination capacity of hybrid AC//PEDOT:PSS@MXene cell in 500 mg L−1 NaCl solution is 35.8 mg g−1.

After 40 desalting cycles, the cell performs better retention rate than AC//MXene cell (82.5 %), which keeps 97.2 %.

The morphology and structure of composite show no exists of TiO2 […]

Thermo- and light responsive microgels for efficient brackish and seawater forward osmosis desalination – Germany

In forward osmosis, microgels can be used either in a dried state or as a concentrated aqueous dispersion. A sample with 25 mol% charged units achieved a balance between water flux and responsiveness. It reached fluxes of 2.84, 4.79 and 4.39 L·m−2·h−1 for the dried state, 40 wt% and 20 wt% dispersions, respectively, when tested with 5 g·L−1 brackish water. Furthermore, a 40 wt% dispersion drew 35 g·L−1 seawater at a flux of 1.36 L·m−2·h−1.

Cyprus plans up to 10 new desalination plants to combat water scarcity – Cyprus

The government has approved a plan to build up to 10 new desalination plants to address growing water scarcity issues caused by prolonged drought and climate change, Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou announced yesterday.

The strategy, approved by the Council of Ministers, includes 28 actions: seven immediate, eight medium-term, and 13 long-term measures. The immediate and medium-term actions aim to address the expected water crisis in 2025-2026 and will increase water supply by more than 15 million cubic metres annually.

Four mobile desalination units have already been approved:
