The BMC supplies 3,900 million litres of water daily (MLD) to the city. However, the city’s reliance on its seven lakes for potable water causes anxiety every year during the monsoon. So, to augment water supply, the BMC revived the ambitious project of a desalination plant.
Chilean miner Antofagasta Minerals on Thursday inaugurated a more than $2 billion desalination plant for its flagship copper mine in Chile, Los Pelambres, aimed at relieving the effects of severe drought that has hit production.
The newly operational plant boasts a remarkable capacity to produce 150,000 m3/day of drinking water, utilizing cutting-edge technologies for seawater treatment. Its design emphasizes reliability and versatility in pretreatment processes, including lamellar sedimentation, Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF), ultrafiltration, and standard chemical adjustments. These features not only ensure the plant’s adaptability to varying raw water qualities but also contribute to its low electricity consumption, setting a new benchmark for reducing carbon footprints in the face of climate change.
The announcement was made during the opening of an international conference on water desalination projects in the Gaza Strip, attended by 31 countries and held at the European Commission Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium.
Barcelona already relies on Europe’s largest desalination plant for domestic use to compensate over three years of below average rainfall that have led to a historic drought made worse by climate change. In February, Catalonia’s regional government declared a drought emergency for much of the surrounding region.
Built at a cost of SAR3.3 billion ($898.3 million), Yanbu 4 IWP is a consortium led by Engie, and includes prominent Saudi companies Nesma and Mowah.
