MDO, PDO link deal to support produced water Desalination – Oman

Minerals Development Oman (MDO), the government’s mining and mineral processing flagship, has signed a contract with Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) for the development of the Qarn Al Alam Hypersaline Associated Produced Water Desalination project.

The initiative will allow MDO, a subsidiary of OIA, to treat the produced water from Qarm Alam to extract salts and milerals.

Precautionary measure at Los Pelambres Desalination Project – Chile

On 15 August severe sea swells overturned a construction platform working on the marine works of the Los Pelambres desalination plant project. There has been no significant environmental impact or damage to the works, and some of the equipment and materials lost have been recovered.

How sunlight could turn seawater into freshwater for coastal communities – Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi-based startup Manhat, founded in 2019, is developing a floating device that distills water without requiring electricity or creating brine. It consists of a greenhouse structure that floats on the surface of the ocean: sunlight heats and evaporates water underneath the structure – separating it from the salt crystals which, are left behind in the sea – and as temperatures cool, the water condenses into freshwater and is collected inside.

Antofagasta halts Los Pelambres desalination work to finish collapse cleanup – Chile

Antofagasta said Chilean authorities had ordered a halt on work at its Los Pelambres desalination plant until equipment lost in a platform collapse last month is recovered.

On August 15 severe sea swells overturned a construction platform at the project. The mining company said there had been no significant environmental impact or damage to the works, and some of the equipment and materials lost have been recovered.

Nemmeli plant shut for maintenance, water supply takes hit in Chennai – India

The two zones require 45 million litres per day (MLD) of water, and receive 38 MLD, of which 28 MLD are supplied from Nemmeli desalination plant and 10 MLD from Veeranam, officials said.  “In the last six months, the Nemmeli plant was shut for maintenance often.

With the Nemmeli desalination plant shut for maintenance, people in parts of Perungudi and Sholinganallur zones haven’t had water supply for nearly a week. They said they are forced to buy water from private suppliers as the plant is being closed every month.

Hydraulic Injection Desalination (HID) technology in plants uses one third less energy top-of-the-line seawater reverse osmosis desalination plants, and ten times less than traditional thermal desalination facilities

Energy consumption in desalination plants is also referred to as the total specific energy consumption. Cal Am receives thumbs up from regulator for desal project application – Monterey, California, USA

The determination is not an approval of the project, rather an acknowledgment that the company has provided all the information needed to submit a fully fleshed out application. The entire project can go before the full commission as early as November.

Membrion receives DOE award for novel manufacturing of desalination membranes – Seattle, USA

Membrion announced today that it received a $1.1 million grant from the United States Department of Energy (DOE), Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO), through the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program.
