Searching for clean water in Gaza – Gaza

There is no simple narrative about water and sanitation in the State of Palestine. It’s one about Gaza, the West Bank, and multiple contexts within each. But for a child – or a family — it’s access to safe water and sanitation that ultimately matters.

That’s why, after three years working in the State of Palestine, I wanted to reflect on the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) story and what UNICEF and partners are doing within the complex challenges.

UN says Gulf’s thirst for water causing toxic brine problem

Saudi Arabia isn’t just the world’s top crude oil exporter. It’s also the biggest producer of a toxic effluent that’s the byproduct of slaking the desert kingdom’s thirst for water.

United Nations scientists warned Tuesday that desalination in Saudi Arabia and other countries is creating huge volumes of chemical-laced brine that risks contaminating food chains if left untreated.

The problem is most acute in the Middle East and North Africa, which account for two-thirds of the world’s water contaminated by […]

REVEALED: SA’s billion dollar water torture – Australia

Former SA Water chair, Essential Services Commissioner and ETSA CEO Lew Owens was last year appointed by Treasurer Rob Lucas to oversee an independent inquiry into water pricing in SA.

InDaily can reveal that Owens has distributed an interim report to stakeholders – entitled “A Cautious Conclusion” – whose economic modelling suggests the valuation of SA Water’s asset base has likely been overstated by at least $421 million – and as much as $1.071 billion.

Recycling water Chennai’s only hope – Chennai

CHENNAI: Chennai’s water woes are legendary. That 2019 too marks another year of crisis is sadly little cause for surprise.

The Northeast Monsoon failed in 2018. There is only enough water in the city’s reservoirs to meet drinking water needs for the next five months.

With erratic rainfall patterns becoming the new normal and Chennai’s groundwater having been exploited to dangerous depths, is there a long-term solution to the almost perennial crisis?

How Israel swims against tide of worldwide water crisis – Israel

Israel has solved its water crisis! That’s a typical headline about Israel’s world-leading smart water management and advanced water technology.

As I sipped freshly desalinated Mediterranean water at the world’s largest seawater desalination plant, the brilliance of Israel’s many-pronged approach was as clear as the H2O in my paper cup.

But if residents, farmers and tourists in the Holy Land never worry about the tap running dry, that’s only because Israel invests huge amounts of money and brainpower to stay one step ahead […]

Welcome Rains Arrive In Israel as Threat of Sixth Year of Drought Looms – Israel

A massive storm front that arrived in Israel on Thursday brought with it heavy downpours spread from the north to the south, helping to abate a six-year drought that has severely depleted the Kinneret.

The storm system was accompanied by a significant drop in temperatures and risk of flooding in the Judean Desert, the Dead Sea region and the Jordan Valley. Authorities warned travelers to beware of flash floods in those areas, and issued an advisory to avoid driving on flooded roads, to adjust driving speeds […]
