Iran’s Biggest Problem Is Water – Iran

Iran is parched. Indeed, this year is expected to be among the driest in the last 50 years. Of the country’s 85 million people, some 28 million people live in water-stressed areas, mostly in the central and southern regions.

Water scarcity is hitting all segments of society, from urban households to rural farming communities.

Iran isn’t alone in its plight. Of the 17 most water-stressed states in the world, 12 are in the Middle East and North Africa, which includes all the littoral states of the Persian Gulf.

School bags have grown bigger as children carry more water bottles, and Tamil Nadu’s apple of the eye – the famed Information Technology Corridor – has been pushed to the brink.

Companies have started asking employees to work […]

The drop in the level of the Koudiet Asserdoune dam puts 4 wilayas at risk – Algeria

In Algeria, climate change is mainly manifested by the lack of rainfall. In some parts of the country, water resources are poorly exploited.

This situation has led to the drying up of the Koudiet Asserdoune dam, which has a storage capacity of 640 million m3. The structure, located on the Isser wadi, is the main source of drinking water for at least four wilayas.

Some 4 million people living in the wilayas of Bouira, Médéa, Tizi Ouzou and M’Sila in Algeria are virtually deprived of drinking water.

Rami Ghandour, managing director of UAE-based water company Metito Utilities, knows these and similar figures by heart.

He can tell you how much of the population of Egypt inhabits water-intensive cities (97 percent) and how much water the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region consumes per capita compared to the US (significantly more).
