The Public Works Department (PWD) in Puducherry has planned to set up a one MLD (million litres per day) desalination plant on a pilot basis in the city, to overcome the depletion of groundwater sources and to meet the ever-expanding drinking water requirements of residents in the urban agglomeration limits.
These PX devices are expected to prevent over 400,000 metric tons of carbon emissions from entering the atmosphere each year, the equivalent of removing over 85,000 passenger cars from the road each year.
Chart Industries will supply compressors for China’s Dalian seawater hydrogen production project that is expected to generate 130kWH of green electricity and 2,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year.
“The issues that were raised earlier are all about Metro Manila, but let me take everyone outside Metro Manila. Metro Cebu area’s demand is 570 MLD and you know how much water can be supplied? 270 MLD. So, as we speak there is a shortage of 300 MLD,” Juan Eugenio L. Roxas, president and chief executive officer of FDCUI, said in a water forum hosted by Stratbase ADR Institute on Monday.
The MoU aims to develop reverse osmosis technologies for seawater and related processes, improve pollution resistance and energy consumption, and expel salts from washing processes for osmosis technologies, in addition to developing innovative technologies, such as Zero liquid discharge (ZLD), micro membranes, and seawater mining technologies.
The 250l/s reverse osmosis plant went to a consortium comprising La Peninsular Compañía Constructora and Acciona Agua, which has a 25-year concession to design, build and operate it. Another contract for the integral improvement of the distribution system went to a consortium comprising FCC Aqualia and Aqualia México for 1.3bn pesos, which now holds a 10-year concession to improve, operate and maintain the system.

The desalination plant will produce 16 million cubic metres of fresh water, which means more than 20% of the Algarve’s public supply needs, estimated at 72 million cubic metres, says Águas do Algarve.
With the addition of the Rabigh 4 IWP, Acwa Power will double its desalination capacity in the area to 1.2 million m3/day and to 6.8 million m3/day across its portfolio, making it the largest private producer of desalinated water globally.
