Jetama Sdn Bhd (JSB), a subsidiary of Sabah Development Berhad (SDB) under the State Ministry of Finance, is leading efforts to tackle water supply challenges in Sabah with a new seawater desalination system.

Showcased at the Conference of the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organizations (CAFEO 42), held from October 22 to 24 at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), the system can desalinate seawater into reverse osmosis (RO) water suitable for industrial use. Through this innovative solution, treated industrial water can be redirected to local communities to ease domestic water shortages.

The modular, mobile design of the system allows for quick installation and the ability to provide water to Sabah’s expanding industrial parks. Installation takes approximately five to six months, and the system can also integrate solar power and batteries for areas with limited electricity or those relying on diesel generators.

At the CAFEO Conference, attendees observed how the system processes seawater into drinkable water using nano-filtration and ultraviolet (UV) treatment. JSB’s initiative marks a substantial advancement for the Sabah government-linked company (GLC) and aims to meet the growing water demand of Sabah’s industrial sector.
