Chennai records 56 per cent above normal rainfall, but little water in reservoirs – India

Chennai has recorded 56 per cent above normal rainfall since June 1, with 247.5 millimetres rainfall from June 1 to July 27.

Despite the good rains, Chennai’s reservoirs — Poondi, Cholavaram, Redhills and Chembarakkam — have not seen any significant improvement in water levels.

The combined storage at the four reservoirs stood at 16 Mcft against 1,734 Mcft last year.

Serving and retired police officials protest for water in Chennai – India

The ongoing water crisis in Tamil Nadu continues to bring residents to the streets in protest.

The latest are serving and retired police personnel, who alleged that Metro Water was not periodically servicing their official quarters near Melakottaiyur, a Chennai suburb.

Flash protests broke out on Kelambakkam road on Wednesday, as 300 residents brought traffic to a standstill on the stretch.

Foundation stone for 150 MLD-desalination plant laid near Chennai – Chennai – India

June 27 (IANS) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami on Thursday laid the foundation stone for the 150 MLD-desalination plant near here.

The project involves an outlay of Rs 1,259.38 crore, the government said.

Currently, there are two desalination plants each with a capacity of 100 million litre per day (MLD) catering to the 10 lakh residents of North Chennai and nine lakh residents of South Chennai.

Chennai’s 3rd desalination plant to be launched next week – Chennai

In about two years, Chennai will get water from its third desalination plant.

The project, that will supply 150 million litres a day, is likely to be launched in Nemmeli on Thursday, Metrowater officials said. The plant will cater to residents of several areas, including Velachery, Palavakkam and Perungudi.

In addition to this, for establishing the fourth desalination plant in Perur, that will supply 400 mld to the city, Metrowater has set the ball rolling after a lot of delay.

Chennai: Water starved Chennai is all set to get some relief as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami Friday said 10 million litres would be transported from Jolarpet in Vellore district by train to augment supply.
