Metito, Scatec and Orascom to invest in solar desalination – Egypt

Three companies want to invest in the supply of drinking water in Egypt. They are the Emirati company Metito Holdings, the Norwegian group Scatec and the Egyptian company Orascom Construction, gathered in consortium.

The partners are currently in talks with the Sovereign Wealth Fund of Egypt (TFSE) for the construction of a new seawater desalination plant in the country.

The capacity of the future plant will be between 1 and 2 million m3 of water per day.

Nearly 11 Arab and International companies are planning to officially submit their offers to bid on desalination projects in Egypt, government sources told Al Borsa News.

These projects are set to be carried out with a total estimated investment of up to $2.8 billion, the sources highlighted.

The companies include ACWA Power, Hassan Allam, Al Nowais Group, Schneider Electric, Orascom Construction, and Matito, in addition to, other Chinese, Japanese, American, French, and German companies, they added.

The Egyptian Deputy Minister of Housing for Infrastructure Affairs Sayed Ismail held talks with officials from 10 English companies about investing in desalinated water and sanitation projects.

This came during Ismail’s participation in the 11th World Water-Tech Innovation Summit, held in the British capital of London last week.

Ismail referred to ambitious plan adopted by the government to modernize the infrastructure in all sectors and promising areas, including the New Administrative Capital and the industrial zone of the Suez Canal axis.

The Egyptian government is in talks with a consortium comprised Dubai-based Metito Holdings Ltd, Norway’s Scatec ASA, and Orascom Construction PLC (ORAS) over a $1.5 billion renewables-powered desalination plant, Bloomberg reported.

This move comes as part of Egypt’s strategy in addressing possible water shortages.

The consortium is seeking to partner up with the Sovereign Fund of Egypt on setting up the plant, which would follow a build-own-operate-transfer system (BOOT), according to Managing Director of Metito for Africa Karim Madwar.

Egypt PM discusses with Emirati company desalination and green hydrogen projects – Egypt

Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly held talks on Sunday with the head of the Emirati energy company AMEA, Hussain al-Nowais, on water desalination and green hydrogen projects.
