Stage-1 clearance granted for desal plant inside Koonimedu forest – Chennai – India

CHENNAI: The Regional Empowered Committee of Union Environment Ministry has granted stage-1 clearance for construction of a desalination plant inside Koonimedu forest area in Villupuram district.

The decision was taken at a recently held meeting in Chennai. Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD) will construct the plant in an area of 16 hectares.

Chennai’s groundwater levels rise after November – India

CHENNAI: With Chennai receiving copious amounts of rainfall ever since the monsoon began, groundwater levels have again seen an improvement compared to November.

Promising enough drinking water for the next one year, sources from the Chennai Metro Water department said they will reduce purchase of water from Nemmeli and Minjur desalination plants for about three months. 

In December, groundwater level had improved by nearly one metre compared to November 2020, according to official data of the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB).

Thane civic body shelves idea of desalination plant – India

Four years after it was first proposed, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has finally shelved the desalination plant to be set up along the creek to convert the creek water into potable water.

The plant was scrapped by the general body last week that claimed that it was too expensive for the city and that other ways of water conservation need to be explored.

Pipe laying work begins at Nemmeli desalination plant – India

Earlier this week, Metrowater started laying a 49 km-pipeline to carry water from the under construction desalination plant in Nemmeli to various areas till Pallavaram.

Like many others, the pandemic has affected the progress of the project to build a third plant in Nemmeli.

The ₹1,259.38 crore project to build another desalination plant along East Coast Road may get delayed by a few months beyond its December 2021 deadline.

Mumbai: BMC gets Israel experts‘ help for desalination plant – India

After the Shiv Sena’s pet project, Coastal Road, the BMC is now turning its focus on the desalination plant at Manori, for which it has sought the help of the government of Israel that is a pioneer in the technology.

Experts from Israel will join the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for the feasibility study of this project.

The study will examine the possibility of the project’s success and if the site where the BMC plans to set up the plant is good enough.

‚No dam needed if desalination unit at Manori gets off ground‘ – India

MUMBAI: The proposed 200 million litre daily desalination plant at Manori will do away with the need to construct the Gargai-Pinjal dam and help save three lakh trees that may have to be cut for the dam project, said additional municipal commissioner (projects) P Velarasu on Tuesday.

Velarasu further said while the decision to not construct the dam will be taken at the chief minister’s level, the desalination plant provides an „excellent alternative“ to the large dam project which would be environmentally more harmful, requiring submergence of land and forests.
