The TDS level, according to an official in 27 odd bore wells, has gone beyond 2,000 ppm. Several of the borewells have been shut in recent times, the official said. âPresently, various physical and chemical qualities such as TDS, PH, Nitrate, Iron, and Chloride are overshooting the permissible limits. We are taking adequate measures, including placing iron removers, before pumping the water to households,â said another official.

Chennaiâs fourth desalination plant will come up in Perur on East Coast Road. To be built by the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) with funding support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the projectâs estimated cost is Rs 4,276.44 crore.

Mr. Nehru said the plant would be operated on a trial basis later this month. It would take at least a month for the plant to be ready for water supply. Initially, 25 mld would be supplied from the plant and the quantum would be stepped up to maximum capacity in phases in about two months.
