NAB takes notice of dysfunctional desalination plants – Pakistan

Taking cognisance of three dysfunctional desalination plants in Pasni, Jewani and Gadani, National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Balochistan Director General Mirza Muhammad Irfan Baig has issued notices to the Balochistan Development Authority (BDA) and others responsible.

BDA had initiated three different projects in Pasni, Jiwani and Dam Jati at a cost of Rs1 billion to address water shortage in the areas, but despite a passage of 12 years the desalination plants are not operational.

World Bank to provide $1B grants for Sinai development – Sinai – Egypt

The World Bank commission in charge of following up with the Sinai Integrated Development Programme headed by Ashish Khanna and Minister of Investment and International Cooperation Sahar Nasr discussed on Sunday finalizing the measures necessary for $1B grants.

The ministry also secured financing in the value of $2.5 billion from the Saudi Development Fund, the Kuwait Fund for the Arab Economic Development, and the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development.

Israel aims to fully depend on water desalination in 5 years – Israel

Israel is expected by 2022-2023 to be probably the first country in the world to depend fully on desalination plants to meet its population drinking water need.

Nowadays Israel is already producing around 600 million cubic meters of desalinated water equal to about 70-80 percent of the country’s tap drinking water demand.

Israel is a leading country in using desalinated water, started in 2005 with a capacity of 20 million cubic meters, and since then, the amount increases every year.

Hyflux exits contract with SWCC amid company reorganisation.

Hyflux has quit a contract with Saudi Arabia’s Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) for three seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) plants, amid moves to restructure the company.

The contract to design, build, supply, test, and commission SWROs in Duba, Wajh, and Haql, in the west of Saudi Arabia, was terminated with mutual agreement after SWCC requested to change the project to a build, own, transfer (BOT) model.
