Details of Geingob, Masisi secrete meetings revealed – Namibia

The meeting took place at State House on Thursday during Botswana president Mokgweetsi Masisi’s visit to Namibia.

Masisi was in Namibia for a one-day “working visit”.The details of the meeting only became known after Masisi tweeted about it on Thursday night.

“They have started talks with an investor who is offering to desalinate water from the Atlantic Ocean and supply them.

UraMin proposes new idea on Namibian desalination plant – Namibia

Uranium producer UraMin-Areva Resources Namibia has proposed that the Namibian government expand a desalination plant currently being built by the company instead of building a second one, The Namibian reports.

The mining company, a subsidiary of the French energy giant Areva, recently submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Agriculture, proposing that “the Ministry weigh the potential advantages of co-operation in the current plant before proceeding with the second one”.

Ambitious AR eyes Erongo Desalination Plant – Namibia

Activist group, Affirmative Repositioning Movement (AR) made a formal offer to buy the Erongo Desalination Plant from Orano Mining Namibia. The plant is estimated to be worth over N$3 billion.

Speaking to the Namibia Economist, AR founder Dr Job Amupanda said they plan on expanding the capacity of the plant which is situated 35km north of Swakopmund and work on bringing water to Central Namibia, particularly to Windhoek.

Desalination plant output hits record high – Namibia

Originally built by Orano (then Areva Resources Namibia) to supply water to its Trekkopje Mine near Arandis, the desalination plant is now an important contributor to the overall supply of the potable water delivery system managed by Namwater.

It provides about 75% of the overall drinking water to Swakopmund, as well as the nearby uranium mines and other industries.

Located 35 kilometres north of Swakopmund, it is the largest reverse osmosis seawater desalination plant in southern Africa.

Tender briefs … Pilot desalination plants for the south – Namibia

THE national water utility NamWater issued a tender for the construction of experimental desalination plants at Grünau and Bethanie in southern Namibia.

These plants will be powered by renewable energy and membrane technology.

The tender, which is open to Namibian companies and joint ventures, was advertised on the company’s website early this month.

Namibia: ‚Desalination Solution to Water Crisis‘ – Namibia

Namibia needs at least three desalination plants to address the country’s water shortage, a University of Namibia professor says.

Unam acting pro-vice chancellor for research, innovation and development, professor Frank Kavishe said this at the university’s Sam Nujoma campus at Henties Bay on Tuesday.

The event was also attended by former president Sam Nujoma and Swapo secretary general Sophia Shaningwa.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry has denied reports suggesting it lacks the capacity to fix two solar-powered desalination plants set up to supply potable water to Amarika and Akutsima in the Omusati Region.

The two solar-powered desalination plants in question were donated by the German government in 2013 at a cost of about N$200 million. ERONGO governor Cleophas Mutjavikua said the regional council through the Erongo water forum wants to acquire the Erongo desalination plant, or erect another plant – Namibia

Erongo, especially the coast, has the least rainfall in Namibia, with the traditional supply from the Omdel and Kuiseb schemes not properly replenished for several years.
Mutjavikua, however, did not elaborate on the terms involved in “acquiring” the N$3 billion dollar plant.
President Hage Geingob’s Harambee Prosperity Plan has plans to build a desalination plant with a capacity of producing 25 million cubic metre per year capacity by the end of 2019.
Having such a plant is a “non-debatable option”, agriculture minister John Mutorwa has said.
