The Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) is planning to invest in a water desalination plant to supply the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) in response to ongoing and future droughts.

The plant, capable of desalinating 300,000 cubic metres of seawater per day, will be set up through a joint venture. It will supply water to factories in the area that has had to reduce water consumption in the past year due to extreme drought.

Jolo named MinDA priority development area – Philippines

THE MINDANAO Development Authority (MinDA) has identified Jolo, the capital of Sulu province, as a priority development area after Taraka town in Lanao del Sur.

“We will come up with a comprehensive proposal and present it to the President,” MinDA Chairperson Emmanuel F. Piñol said in a statement Friday. A new dam and desalination system are among the solutions being explored to address Melaka’s perennial water woes, says Melaka Smart City Advisory Council chairman Khoo Poay Tiong.

He said the water scarcity in Melaka has been made worse by rapid development and growing urban population as well as climate change.

Labella to MCWD board: Look into desalination – Philippines

Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella has advised the new Metropolitan Cebu Water District Board to study the possibility of desalination as a short-term solution to the water crisis in the city.

“Desalination is quite expensive but it is faster to implement,” said Labella.

He said it is the first component in implementing a solution to the water problem and “eventually putting up of dams and using service water.”

Hyflux reaches $290m deal with Middle Eastern savior – Singapore

Embattled water company Hyflux said Tuesday that it has reached a restructuring agreement with United Arab Emirates-based utility company Utico, which will invest 400 million Singapore dollars ($290 million) and acquire a 95% stake in the Singapore company.

The announcement came as Hyflux faces the deadline for its $2 billion debt moratorium on Dec. 2. The company is to explain the progress of the restructuring negotiations at a court hearing this Friday Nov. 29, where it will seek another extension of the moratorium.

Hyflux unit restructures $121.3m loan for desalination plant in China – China

Hyflux said its wholly-owned unit Tianjin Dagang Newspring Co Ltd (TDN) has successfully restructured a 617 million yuan (S$121.3 million) Bank of China loan.

The loan’s maturity date has been extended by three years to 2026, with the repayment schedule adjusted for lower annual repayments.

The loan is for TDN’s 100,000 cubic metre per day seawater desalination plant in Dagang City, Tianjin Province, and is guaranteed by Hyflux.
