The Ministry of Science and Technology on Saturday informed that seawater desalination through “solar thermal forward osmosis” has brought relief to a drought-prone village in Tamil Nadu.

Narippaiyur, a village in Ramanathapuram District, a drought-prone area situated in the South-East corner of Tamil Nadu will benefit from 20,000 litres per day of freshwater produced from the seawater – thanks to the solar thermal Forward Osmosis (FO) sea-water desalination system installed in the place.

Stage-1 clearance granted for desal plant inside Koonimedu forest – Chennai – India

CHENNAI: The Regional Empowered Committee of Union Environment Ministry has granted stage-1 clearance for construction of a desalination plant inside Koonimedu forest area in Villupuram district.

Chennai’s groundwater levels rise after November – India

CHENNAI: With Chennai receiving copious amounts of rainfall ever since the monsoon began, groundwater levels have again seen an improvement compared to November.

Promising enough drinking water for the next one year, sources from the Chennai Metro Water department said they will reduce purchase of water from Nemmeli and Minjur desalination plants for about three months. 

In December, groundwater level had improved by nearly one metre compared to November 2020, according to official data of the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB).

Pipe laying work begins at Nemmeli desalination plant – India

Earlier this week, Metrowater started laying a 49 km-pipeline to carry water from the under construction desalination plant in Nemmeli to various areas till Pallavaram.

Like many others, the pandemic has affected the progress of the project to build a third plant in Nemmeli.

In four years, the city’s thirst will be successfully quenched as the Chennai Metro Water has invited international bidders to build a 400-MLD capacity seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant at Perur along the East Coast Road in Kancheepuram district.

It is also awaiting funds from the World Bank for a project aimed at recharging waterbodies with recycled water.

CHENNAI: The city’s thirst for water could be quenched in the next four years as Chennai Metro Water has started looking for international bidders to build the 400 MLD (million litres a day) capacity sea water reverse osmosis desalination plant at Perur along the East Coast Road in Thiruporur block of Kancheepuram district.

Ullagaram-Puzhuthivakkam now gets piped water – Chennai – India

The residents of Ullagaram-Puzhuthivakkam have begun getting piped water, nearly a decade after the area was added to the city corporation limits.

The underground sewage system became operational more than three years ago.

A senior Metrowater official said work on laying pipelines to supply water began a few years ago in the area which is criss-crossed by 547 streets.

Residents of Kannagi Nagar and Ezhil Nagar complain of erratic water supply – Chennai – India

For three months now, water supply to the Kannagi Nagar and Ezhil Nagar tenements has been erratic and of poor quality, residents have complained.

Water stored in underground sumps and supplied through hand pumps is the only water source for the nearly 23,700 tenements in Kannagi Nagar and about 8,000 tenements in Ezhil Nagar.

N. Mallika, a resident of Kannagi Nagar, said much of the water collected often has to be wasted as it was either discoloured or had a foul smell.
