Creating a Sustainable Future for Desalination – Persian Gulf

It is no secret that we live in a water scarce region. Confronted by limited freshwater resources and growing demand – increasing more than 60 percent by 2025, desalination ensures access to clean water across the Gulf.

Governments and companies are prioritizing water sustainability and overall efficiency to meet this rapidly increasing demand. As a result, seawater desalination capacity of GCC countries is expected to grow by at least 37% in the next five years with investments of up to as much as $100 billion by […]

Israel is hoarding the Jordan River – The Palestinians and Jordan Need their Share – Israel

Two areas farmed by Israelis for more than 50 years have recently been returned to neighbouring Jordan. The first, al Ghamr (known in Israel as Zofar), is located south of the Dead Sea in the Naqab/Negev desert.

The second, al Baqura (Naharayim) is found at the fertile point where a major tributary joins the Jordan River.

The association with water bodies is no coincidence: neither land would have been occupied in the first place were it not for the water that the […]

In the Middle East, countries spend heavily to transform seawater into drinking water – Oman

The pipes work like powerful straws, sucking in seawater and sending it through a series of tanks and filters. The Barka 4 desalination plant is Oman’s newest and largest.

Powered by natural gas, the plant went online last year and at full capacity can churn out 74 million gallons of potable water in a day — enough to fill 112 Olympic-size swimming pools.

Oman relies on desalination because its extreme scarcity of water leaves few other options. In this corner of the Arabian Peninsula, […]
