Access to fresh water in the South Pacific / 6 new OSMOSUN plants deployed – Vanuatu, Oceania

Located in the heart of the South Pacific, the Republic of Vanuatu is an archipelago-state of 83 islands, most of which are volcanic in origin. Water insecurity is exacerbated by rainfall patterns that have become unpredictable because of climate change. The freshwater resources traditionally used – rainwater harvesting and wells – can no longer guarantee year-round access to drinking water. Desalination units have already been installed in the past, but these, operating via fossil-fuel powered generators, are proving unsatisfactory from an environmental point of view and very energy-intensive, with prohibitive costs for the community.

Desalination plant proposed for Noraville – Australia

The proposal is to build and operate a desalination plant, including a seawater extraction pipeline at either Pebbly Beach or Jenny Dixon Beach, needing a pipeline at least two kilometres in length.

Go-ahead for Hunter desalination plant – Australia

The New South Wales Government has given the Hunter Water approval to build a seawater desalination plant in Belmont, with construction expected to begin in late 2024. 

The State Government said that the $530 million investment in building a permanent desalination plant will significantly enhance the region’s drought preparedness and response capabilities. 

As the largest regional economy in New South Wales, the Lower Hunter is particularly vulnerable to dry seasons and drought. This project aims to secure the region’s critical water supply and support continued prosperity and growth.

Saudi’s SWPC receives single proposal for Jubail 4&6 IWP project – KSA

The 600,000 cubic metres per day (m3/day) desalination project, located in the Eastern Province, will also include an electrical substation and is expected to start commercial operations in the first quarter of 2028, SWPC said in a statement last week.

Cutback in production at Pt Lisas Desalination Plant – Trinidad

WASA reported that the plant, operated by the Desalination Company of Trinidad and Tobago (DESALCOTT), typically supplies 40 million gallons of water per day (mgd). Due to raw water quality issues caused by algae buildup at the plant’s intake area, production has been cut back to 30 mgd.
