(MENAFN) Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power has announced a major new project with the signing of an agreement to construct a water desalination plant in the Emirate of Sharjah, UAE. The deal, valued at approximately 2.56 billion riyals (about USD680 million), marks a significant investment in the region’s water infrastructure. The announcement was made through a statement to the Saudi Stock Exchange on Wednesday.
The Mayor of Dénia, Vicent Grimalt, has inaugurated the Desalination Innovation Centre installed by Aqualia in the IDAM of Racons. It is a platform where Aqualia’s projects in this field are centralised. It employs three people, a laboratory, a control centre and various pilot plants for pre-treatment and different types of desalination and post-treatment.
State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Co sent two engineers to Malaysia to support the construction of a seawater desalination plant in late August. The facility, expected to be operational by mid-September, will produce up to 500 tons of fresh water daily, which can meet the demand of around 3,000 residents.

Water treatment player VA Tech WABAG has secured an order from Saudi Water Authority worth USD 317 million (Rs 2,700 crore) for setting up a Mega Sea Water Desalination plant in Saudi Arabia, the company said on Friday.
MCWD and PWRI held an inauguration ceremony on July 31, marking the start of the desalination plant’s operation that is set on August 1, 2024, Daluz said.
ERM has launched offshore trials to test critical elements of its Dolphyn Hydrogen process. “Following six years of development, the trials are being conducted in a floating marine environment in Pembroke Port, South Wales,” said the sustainability consultancy. The Dolphyn Hydrogen process combines electrolysis, desalination, and hydrogen production on a floating wind platform. The system transports the hydrogen to shore via pipeline. It does not require an electrical connection.
EVZ, which has a market capitalisation of $18.76 million, says work is expected to begin immediately on the design and procurement activities.
These activities will begin before a planned mobilisation to site in December 2024 for anticipated completion in the last quarter of 2025.
“We’re all focused on that. That will be the biggest desalination for the Philippines. So far, the target is to have it operational by 2026,” Metro Pacific Water President and Chief Executive Officer Christopher Andrew B. Pangilinan said on the sidelines of an event on Tuesday.
In the summer of 2022, hundreds of tons of dead fish were found in the river that runs along part of Poland’s border with Germany. Smaller amounts of dead fish have been found in Oder and its tributaries several times this year.
