Preparatory work on State’s first seawater desalination plant starts.-Mangalore Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd., (MRPL), has begun preparatory work for the State’s first seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant on the 13 acres of land leased out by New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) here. The Trust has provided land on the southern end of its property at Tannirbhavi to MRPL, along with an acre of seafront land on a 30-year lease. The plant will initially produce 30 million litres per day (MLD) fresh water, expandable up to 70 MLD. (LINK). Acciona wins Saudi desalination project.-Saudi Acciona Agua is to design and build what will be one of Saudi Arabia’s largest desalination plants. The €200m+ plant will have a production capacity of 210,000m3 per day. Saudi government corporation Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) is client for the Al Khobar desalination plant, which will be built in Khobar, on the country’s east coast, about 400km from Riyadh. All 3 of CT’s desalination plants finally up and running – Cape Town – South Africa After months of delays, all three of Cape Town’s desalination plants are up and running. The City of Cape Town says its various water projects are now all on track. The city is still in the midst of a drought. There’ve been many delays at the Monwabisi desalination because of a dispute between the city and the local community. Residents were demanding that more of them be employed at the facility. EU builds photovoltaic energy field to power Southern Gaza Desalination Plant.-Gaza The EU has completed the construction of the biggest photovoltaic energy field in Gaza, Palestine, which will fuel the Southern Gaza Desalination Plant. The Southern Gaza Desalination Plant was funded by the EU and currently provides safe, clean drinking water for 75,000 inhabitants of Gaza. Now powered by the new photovoltaic energy field, and the external investments it is expected to generate, the plant could provide water for more than 250,000 people in Gaza by 2020. (LINK). Desalination plant could be coming to Ingleside.-Ingleside The City of Ingleside announced Wednesday they have an agreement with a company that wants to build a desalination plant on Corpus Christi Bay. Although the site has not yet been picked for the desal plant, it will cost about $800 million to build. However, no taxpayer money will be used. The City has signed a public-private partnership agreement with Poseidon Water based in Boston who will build the desalination plant and sell the water to the San Patricio County Water District and individual companies. Nuclear Operators Scramble To Make Reactors Flexible Enough For New Energy Economy – Arizona – USA Arizona Public Service is studying the possibility of using excess energy from its Palo Verde Nuclear Power Plant, when solar energy is flooding the grid, to desalinate brackish water. In Illinois, Exelon is looking at repurposing a reactor to produce hydrogen when there’s plenty of wind energy on the grid, then using the hydrogen for steelmaking, ammonia production or fuel-cell vehicles. Across the country, nuclear operators are trying to figure out whether they can ramp down their reactors, which are optimized to run at maximum capacity, during those hours or seasons when renewable energy is abundant. Japanese players enter debut facility in Oman.-Japan A project to build a seawater desalination plant in Oman has secured US$114mn from a number of Japanese banks with cover from Japan’s export credit agency Nexi.MUFG Bank, SMBC and Shinsei Bank will extend the loan to the Al Asilah Desalination Company in the form of project finance. Currently under design, the project is expected to launch operations in 2021. Thereafter it will sell approximately 80,000m³ desalinated water a day for over 20 years to the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company, the single buyer of power and water for all IPP/IWPP projects within the Sultanate of Oman.
