S.Africa’s first solar-powered desal plant could produce affordable water

This will be an addition to at least four desalination plants operating in the Western Cape.

According to the Business-live, the French government in collaboration with the Western Cape provincial government have committed to invest R9 million for the project, on a 50-50 basis.

French ecology minister Nicolas Hulot attended the launch of the project on Monday together with Western Cape finance MEC Ivan Meyer.

The membrane was launched in April and showcased at the recent Singapore International Water Week (SIWW). It features low fouling characteristics at low operating pressure to deal with a range of foulants.

The company says that the TLF-400DG has 30% higher permeability compared with current models and has higher resistance to membrane fouling, which reduces the need for frequent cleaning and extends membrane life. Its durability against cleaning chemicals prevents damage during membrane cleaning, and the lower feed pressure also reduces power consumption.

Acciona wins $234m contract to build Saudi desal plant.

Acciona Agua, a leader in providing sustainable solutions for infrastructure and renewable energy projects, said it has been awarded a €200 million ($234 million) contract by Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC), a Saudi government corporation to build a desalination plant in Al Khobar region of the kingdom.

The facility is expected to be completed in two years and will have a capacity of 210,000 cu m per day, making it one of the largest in Saudi Arabia, said a statemenr from the Spanish group.

Dubai begins testing turbines at 700MW M-Station in Jebel Ali.

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) said it has started testing the turbines at the M-Station expansion project in Jebel Ali, which is the newest and largest electricity generation and water desalination plant in the UAE.

Testing includes an initial operation of turbines and power generators and connecting them to the grid, said a statement from the Dubai utility.

Largest water desalination plant opens in Oman.

Muscat – The largest water desalination plant was officially opened, pumping up to 281,000 cubic metres per day.

The Barka Desalination Company has announced the commercial launch of the Barka Independent Water Project (IWP).

A consortium made up of Itochu Corporation, ENGIE, SUEZ, and Towell Engineering, to finance, build and operate a new seawater desalination plant in Barka under a 20-year Water Purchase Agreement.

Nanyang Technological launches first 3D-printing plant for water filtration membranes.

Nanyang Technological University announces launch of a 3D-printing facility to manufacture a new type of water treatment membrane. Made from millions of nano fibers layered on top of each and compressed into a thin membrane, the new membrane requires less maintenance and is more cost efficient. It is more resistant to breakage and bio-fouling.

Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) recently announced that Nano Sun, a water technology start-up founded by a scientist from NTU, has launched a 3D-printing facility to manufacture a new type of water treatment membrane.

St Helena Bay gets two desalination plants.

Two desalination plants have been launched in St Helena Bay.

More than R30 million has been invested in the plants. The project was launched by the Oceana Group in collaboration with local and provincial government.

Environmental & Social Director at Lucky Star Operations, Titania Stephanus-Zinche: „Saldhana Bay Municipality as well as the Bergrivier Municipality made the desalination plant part of their water crisis emergency intervention plan and we had support from the provincial government and the Department of Envirnmental Affairs, Development and Planning, they assisted to ensure this was done evironmentally responsibly.“
