A Lakewood company that makes solar power collectors has been awarded a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy for technology that uses solar power to desalinate water. SkyFuel, which employs around 80 people in Lakewood, was granted $1.6 million by the U.S. Department of Energy for their patented membrane-based parabolic solar trough collectors. Water plan urges preparation for dry times in New Mexico. New Mexico’s supply of groundwater should be reserved for periods of drought, communities should have sharing agreements in place when supplies are short and alternatives such as desalination should be explored regardless of the cost. The recommendations are part of the state’s draft water plan released late Monday. The public will have 30 days to comment on the lengthy document. Khader revives proposal on desalination plant for city. Reviving the proposal for setting up a desalination plant in the city, Urban Development Minister U.T. Khader has asked the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board (KUWS&DB) to prepare a feasibility report on it. The board has been asked to consult major industries in the city such as MRPL, MCF Ltd. and MSEZ Ltd. on their water requirement before preparing the report. Saudi SWCC inks agreement for 3 floating desalination plants. Saudi Arabia’s Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) has reportedly inked a deal with an international firm for the production of 150,000 cubic meters of potable desalinated water daily through three floating desalination plants established on barges. Each floating desalination plant was confirmed to offer a production capacity of of 50,000 cubic meters of desalinated water per day. The barges were designed to be stationed opposite Al-Shaqeeq desalination plants in order to feed the SWCC tanks with desalinated water. (LINK). New research suggests there’s a large untapped resource for many of the increasingly water-limited regions of the U.S. and around the world: brackish groundwater, which, in theory at least, would require much less energy to desalinate than seawater. Saudi PIF takes key stake in Acwa Power. Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) has acquired a significant stake in the International Company For Water And Power Projects (Acwa Power), a leading developer, owner, and operator of power generation and water desalination plants. As a result of the investment, PIF will become a 15.2 per cent direct shareholder in Acwa Power and, by taking into account the 9.78 per cent ownership of its wholly-owned subsidiary Sanabil Direct Investments Company, PIF’s total shareholding directly and indirectly represents a 24.98 per cent equity interest in Acwa Power, a statement said. PUB and research partner to reduce energy consumption of seawater desalination. To meet Singapore’s water needs and reduce the energy costs of treating seawater, national water agency PUB and its research partner Evoqua Water have announced a new process that can potentially reduce the energy consumption of seawater desalination by half. Currently, up to 30 per cent of Singapore’s water needs is desalinated by reverse osmosis, a process which pushes seawater through membranes that filter out dissolved salts and minerals. (LINK). Imran offers garbage-fuelled desalination plant to Karachi. Imran Khan proposed to solve Karachi’s garbage problem by using it to generate electricity, simultaneously powering a desalination plant for overcoming the water shortage in the city. He made this declaration soon after PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif and PPP leader Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari promised to convert Karachi into a model South Asian city.
