A new study by a Murdoch researcher may help keep desalination plants flowing

first benchmarking study of the bacterial build up on the filtration membranes of a full-scale desalination plant.

This problem, known as biofouling, is estimated to cost the worldwide industry US$15 billion each year.

Patmos and Arki in the eastern Aegean have achieved water autonomy with the creation of desalination units

The units were acquired in 2012 but then the plan was abandoned. Work to set up and operate them, along with the refinery and accompanying projects got under way again in December 2016 and was completed in early June 2017. The capacity of each unit reaches 240,000 cubic meters of drinking water per year — enough to meet the needs of Patmos and Arki.

Morocco will soon be home to the world’s largest renewable energy-run desalination plant

Morocco will soon be home to the world’s largest renewable energy-run desalination plant for drinking water and irrigation, following the signing of Phase One of the €309-million ($352.9 million) project.

The project will be developed by Abengoa, an international company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainability in the energy and environment sectors, in the Agadir region in partnership with the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) and BMCE Bank.

The first of its kind in Singapore, the Keppel Marina East Desalination Plant will be a large-scale dual-mode desalination plant in Singapore that can treat both seawater and freshwater. ERONGO governor Cleophas Mutjavikua said the regional council through the Erongo water forum wants to acquire the Erongo desalination plant, or erect another plant – Namibia

Erongo, especially the coast, has the least rainfall in Namibia, with the traditional supply from the Omdel and Kuiseb schemes not properly replenished for several years.
Mutjavikua, however, did not elaborate on the terms involved in “acquiring” the N$3 billion dollar plant.
