JSE-listed Growthpoint Properties and the Public Investment Corporation (PIC), equal joint owners of the Victoria & Alfred (V&A) Waterfront in Cape Town, will be commissioning a R184 million desalination plant in the precinct in March and April next year.

A Chinese company has been awarded a contract to build a sea water desalination plant in Iraq to tackle a potable water shortage in the area.The desalination and hydro-electric facility complex will be constructed by Shanghai Electric Company in the Southern Basra city under an agreement with the Baghdad government, according to Basra Governor’s office.
The desalination plants, each boasting a daily capacity of 200,000 gallons, collectively amounting to an impressive 600,000 gallons, are poised to be instrumental in providing a sustainable water supply to the beleaguered area.
The plant produces 50 million gallons of desalinated seawater (MGD) a day and provide 10% of the total drinking water needed by San Diego. It supplies 56,000 acre-feet (approximately 2,440 cubic feet) of water a year, sufficient for 300,000 people.
Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) has announced that it has signed power purchase agreements with consortiums of Al Jomaih Energy and Water as well as Saudi Electricity Company for its key conventional independent power plant (IPP) projects – Taiba-1, Taiba-2, Qassim-1, and Qassim-2 – being set up in the kingdom at an investment of nearly SR29 billion ($7.8 billion).
According to the document, 8.2 billion rubles (about $106 million) will be allocated for the construction of the plants in 2021–2022, of which almost 7.8 billion (about $100 million) will come from the federal budget and an additional 410 million rubles ($5.3 million) will come from the regions.
