This is one of the largest water facilities to be built by the Spanish multinational, as the budget allocated by the local authorities for this infrastructure amounts to AU$2.8 billion (about €1.7 billion). Tseung Kwan O Desalination Plant Becomes Operational – Hong Kong

The first stage of the Tseung Kwan O Desalination Plant started its operation on 22 December. Upon entering into full operation, the plant will meet around 5% of the overall fresh water demand in Hong Kong with a water production capacity at 135,000m3 per day. The plant, together with the Pak Kong Water Treatment Works and the Tseung Kwan O Primary Fresh Water Service Reservoir, will supply drinking water to Sai Kung, as well as parts of East Kowloon and Hong Kong Island.

TAQA, GS Inima, EWEC announce financial closing of $435mln Shuweihat 4 seawater desalination project – Abu Dhabi

Located within the Shuweihat Power and Water Complex, S4 RO will supply up to 70 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD) of potable water, equivalent to approximately 320,000 cubic metres per day, significantly enhancing the security of water supply in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. Commercial operations are expected to commence in Q2 2026, with EWEC procuring water supplied by the S4 RO plant for 30 years.

China’s Shanghai Electric to build water desalination plant in Iraq

A Chinese company has been awarded a contract to build a sea water desalination plant in Iraq to tackle a potable water shortage in the area.The desalination and hydro-electric facility complex will be constructed by Shanghai Electric Company in the Southern Basra city under an agreement with the Baghdad government, according to Basra Governor’s office.

Brazil’s biggest desalination project obtains key permit – SA

Under the 30-year PPP contract Águas de Fortaleza is due to invest 3.1bn reais (US$632mn) to build, operate and maintain the 1,000l/s plant that will supply potable water to Cagece’s Mucuripe and Praça da Imprensa reservoirs. 

Of the total, 526mn reais will be invested in construction and installing pipes, and work is expected to be concluded in the first months of 2026. The plant is designed to benefit 720,000 people.

Hamma Seawater Desalination Plant in Algeria Honored with OPIC Impact Award for Critical Infrastructure – North Africa

In 2008, Hamma Water Desalination SpA, a special project company combining 70 percent financing from GE and 30 percent from the Algerian Energy Company, was selected to design, build, own and operate the 200,000-cubic-meters-per-day (53 million gallons per day) Hamma Seawater Desalination Plant. It is a reverse osmosis (RO) seawater desalination facility that significantly alleviates water scarcity in Algiers and was the first RO desalination plant in Africa to be funded by public and private investment. GE also was awarded a 25-year contract to operate and maintain the plant.
