Thames Water’s £250million desalination plant is turned OFF even though it is supposed to supply drinking water to 400,000 London homes every day during droughts – London, UK

The plant, which was opened by the Duke of Edinburgh in 2010, is the only one in the UK designed to turn salty seawater into fresh water. 

It was originally marketed as being able to offer an additional 150 million litres of water a day – but this has now been revised down by a third to 100 million.

It said that regardless of the plant’s current operational status, short term hosepipe bans would still be required to curb water usage.

75 water desalination plants operating across Iran – Tehran

Iran’s National Water and Wastewater Engineering Company is operating and constructing 95 water desalination plants with a total capacity of 634,000 cubic meters per day across the country, of which 75 plants are currently operational, according to an official with the company.

“Based on the government’s plan to develop the capacity of water desalination plants and to expand the use of these facilities, over the next four years, at least 400,000 cubic meters per day will be added to the capacity of the country’s water desalination plants,” Golrizan said.

Israel launches plan to restore and develop southern Jordan River – Jordan

The plan aims to increase the amount of water and cut pollution in the Israeli section of the river, with the establishment of a new desalination facility that will treat the polluted and salty water.

Today, only about 70 million cubic meters of water flow in the southern course per year, mostly polluted and salty due to the activity of a nearby sewage treatment plant.

GS Inima reaches financial close for Barka V water desalination project – Muscat, Oman

The Barka V independent water desalination project, located 58km west of Muscat, has a capacity of 100,000 cubic meters per day and will supply drinking water to a population of 800,000 people.

The completion of construction and commissioning of the project is scheduled for June 6, 2024 developed under a BOO (build, own and operate) contract basis during an operation period of 20 years.
