MIT suggests a different approach to reducing the rate of fouling – USA

…

The prevailing idea in the industry has been that the high pressure required by RO is responsible for the relatively high rate of fouling, compared to other systems such as forward osmosis. But the MIT study shows that this is not the case, a finding that opens up new approaches to reducing fouling in RO. The research, by Emily Tow ’12, SM ’14, PhD ’17 and MIT Professor John H. Lienhard V, was recently published in the Journal of Membrane Science and presented at the 2017 AMTA/AWWA Membrane Technology Conference, where it received the Student Best Paper Award.

Nickel Hexacyanoferrate Electrodes for Continuous Cation Intercalation Desalination of Brackish Water – USA – Illinois

Abstract:

Using porous electrodes containing redox-active nickel hexacyanoferrate (NiHCF) nanoparticles, we construct and test a device for electrochemical water desalination in a two flow-channel device where the electrodes are in direct contact with an anion-exchange membrane. Upon reduction of NiHCF, cations intercalate into it and the water in its vicinity is desalinated; at the same time water in the opposing electrode becomes more saline upon oxidation of NiHCF in that electrode. In a cyclic process of charge and discharge, fresh water is continuously produced, alternating between the two channels in sync with the direction of applied current. Compared to […]

Performance Analysis of the Mechanical Vapor Compression Desalination System Driven by an Organic Rankine Cycle

Abstract:
A desalination system through mechanical vapor compression (MVC), coupling with an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) to drive the steam compressor, is proposed in this paper. Integrated mechanisms of the coupled desalination system are simulated and demonstrated based on the first and second law of thermodynamics, and the corresponding thermal performance is analyzed. Based on the system characteristics at the designed conditions for five types of working fluid, top temperature at the outlet of the boiler and the ambient temperature are designated to illustrate the evocable influence principles. It is observed that the variation trend of the performance both […]

Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) entitled “Solar Desalination USA-Washington

The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) intends to issue, on behalf of the Solar Energy Technology Office, a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) entitled “Solar Desalination”.

This FOA supports research, development, and potential demonstration of early stage technologies that can significantly reduce the costs of desalination powered by solar thermal energy. Rather than utilizing high-value electricity as an energy input, solar thermal desalination can achieve lower costs than current reverse osmosis systems by lowering the cost of collecting and storing solar thermal energy and increasing the efficiency of thermal desalination technologies.

Additionally, thermal desalination can […]

Growing crops from seawater takes root in arid Jordan desert

The innovative facility brings together saltwater cooling and solar-powered desalination technology to produce both vegetables and fresh water.

Water-poor Jordan has launched a project that uses seawater coupled with clean energy to produce crops in an arid desert not far from the Red Sea.

Jordan’s King Abdullah II and Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, which contributed most of the $3.7 million cost, inaugurated the facility in the kingdom’s port city of Aqaba this week. Haakon told reporters he was “impressed by the way innovative ideas have been translated into a plant the size of four football fields.” […]

USA Bureau of Reclamation Awards $3.62M for Desalination and Water Purification Research in 13 States

… Bureau of Reclamation Acting Commissioner Alan Mikkelsen announced today that Reclamation will provide $3.62 million to conduct laboratory and pilot-scale desalination and water purification research in 13 states.

Sixteen laboratory projects, four new pilot-scale projects and one continuing pilot-scale project were selected. The $3.62 million in federal funding is being matched by $3.52 million in non-federal funds. „Desalination and water treatment provide a potential new source of water for communities throughout the West,“ Mikkelsen said.

„The research funding provided today will enable new technologies to be studied to see if they can help improve the treatment […]

Eiffage Génie Civil and Tedagua deliver Djibouti renewable desalination development

A €63 million development in Djibouti will see up to 45,000 m3/day of drinking water delivered by renewable powered desalination.

The country’s Economy and Finance Ministry has commissioned the deal, with the National Water and Wastewater Treatment Office (ONEAD) serving as project manager. French engineering company Eiffage Génie Civil, taking €37 million from the deal, will deliver it in a consortium with Spanish water company Tedagua.

To be built in the Doraleh neighbourhood, the desalination plant will initially have a capacity of 22,500 m3 /day with plans to extend production to 45,000 m3/day. In addition, a 5,000 […]

Carbon nano tubes

Scientists are using carbon nanotubes as a filter to desalinate water…

“We found that carbon nanotubes with diameters smaller than a nanometer bear a key structural feature that enables enhanced transport. The narrow hydrophobic channel forces water to translocate in a single-file arrangement, a phenomenon similar to that found in the most efficient biological water transporters,” said Ramya Tunuguntla, an LLNL postdoctoral researcher. The nanotube pores have been specifically sized to filter water molecules in a single file, effectively let through as much as possible while blocking the larger salt ions. This method means far faster desalination times. “You can imagine […]
