The Palm Beach seawater desalination plant is back in service – Algeria

The Palm Beach seawater desalination plant is back in service since August 19, 2021, at a time when Algeria continues its fight against drought due to its arid climate and climate change.

The plant, located in the wilaya (province) of Tipaza, now produces 7,500 m3 of drinking water per day, compared to 2,500 m3 before the expansion work.

The reverse osmosis plant is capable of supplying 50,000 people per day.

Al Dahira water transmission system to be operational by year-end – Oman

A major water transmission project that will supply desalinated water from Suhar to towns in Al Dhahirah Governorate will be operational before the end of this year, according to an official of Oman Water and Wastewater Services (OWWC).

Eng Ibrahim bin Hamad al Hasani, Project Manager, told Oman News Agency (ONA) that the transmission project, currently 81 per cent complete, will ease the Al Dhahirah’s dependence on groundwater for its requirements of potable water. Groundwater supplies are currently sourced from the Al Massarat Basin.

Haitian-Led Relief Effort to Deliver 30,000 Liters of Clean Water Per Day to Earthquake Survivors – Caribbean Sea

Haitian communities devastated by Saturday’s earthquake are receiving critical clean water from a Haitian-led relief effort supported by the GivePower Foundation, World Hope International, Amazon, Community Organized Relief Effort (CORE), West Indies Self Help (WISH) and World Central Kitchen.

The coalition will deliver 30,000 liters of water to hard-hit areas each day, providing critical safe drinking water to roughly 15,000 people in need.

In the wake of a disaster, clean water is not only vital for hydration but also for preventing secondary health emergencies resulting from a lack […]

Letters to the Editor: Drought-proof California with more desalination plants – California

A drought can be defined as „a prolonged period of abnormally low rainfall.“ What if the lack of rain and snow is the new normal?

California would have to find other sources of fresh water, and desalination of sea water is probably the best of a limited number of choices.

There are already 12 desalination plants in operation in California, and we would hope that the state already has plans in place for design, permitting and construction of many more.

Egypt positioned to become desalination pioneer – Egypt

Egypt is exploring ways to increase its water resources and offset any negative effects of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) in light of the stalled tripartite negotiations between it, Sudan and Ethiopia.

Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan have been in a deadlock over the GERD since April. The crisis was raised more than once before the UN Security Council — most recently in July — which referred it back to the African Union, but to no avail.

Ethiopia continues to fill the GERD reservoir, disregarding objections raised by Egypt and Sudan.

Pima County Considers Building Costly Desalination Plant – Arizona

That’s how a Pima County, Ariz., official, Eric Wieduwilt, describes a new proposal for a $4.1 billion desalination project that would start with a plant to remove salt from seawater in the Sea of Cortez in Sonora.

Then, the water would be shipped 196 miles by underground pipeline to the Tucson area, says a county study of the project.

The cost could add up to $60 to $90 per month to the typical Tucson-area homeowner’s water bill, said the County Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department’s study.

Parched Egypt seeks partners for $2.5bn desalination plan – Egypt

Egypt is seeking partners to invest in a $2.5 billion initiative to build more than a dozen renewable energy-powered desalination plants by 2025, as the country tries to tackle looming water scarcity.

Officials plan 17 new plants that would run on solar and other green sources, with each built, owned and operated by Egypt’s sovereign wealth fund in partnership with a group of local and foreign investors, according to the fund’s chief executive officer, Ayman Soliman.

The Arab world’s most populous nation relies on the Nile River for almost […]

Monterey Peninsula water officials balk at agreement with Cal Am – California

An agreement that would turn on the taps for recycled water for Monterey Peninsula residents hit a speed bump Monday when water officials balked at a clause that would require the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District to support any California American Water Co. project, including desalination, should the recycled water fail to meet a promised amount.

For Cal Am to purchase water from Monterey One Water’s Pure Water Monterey Expansion project, a water purchase agreement, or WPA, would need to be signed by Cal Am, Monterey One Water and the water district.

EXPLAINER: Western water projects in infrastructure deal – Washington

Included in the sweeping $1 trillion infrastructure bill approved by the Senate is funding for Western water projects that farmers, water providers and environmentalists say are badly needed across the parched region.

The Senate voted this week in favor of the legislation that seeks to rebuild U.S. roads and highways, improve broadband internet access and modernize water pipes and public works systems. The bill’s future in the House is uncertain.

The federal funding would come as the West bakes under a decadeslong drought that is straining water supplies.

Assurance over drinking water supplies as desalination unit planned for Sizewell C – United Kingdom

A temporary desalination plant will have to be installed to provide enough water during the construction of Sizewell C if the £20billion nuclear power plant gets the go-ahead.

Consultation is under way on the plans for the unit, which would take sea water and remove the salt to create drinking quality water, because water companies cannot guarantee supplies.

But opponents of the power project say until the desalination plant is ready it will mean 40 more trucks a day visiting the site to deliver potable water.
