Gary Griggs, Our Ocean Backyard | For desalination, gather data before making decision – California

While facts today don’t settle all or even many arguments, as a scientist I believe that it’s important to learn as much as we can about an issue before reaching a decision or taking a position.

As Neil deGrasse Tyson once said, “The wonderful thing about science is that it’s true, whether or not you believe it.”

One issue that is brought up in all discussions about desalination is the potential impact on the marine environment.

Fort Bragg moves into Stage 3 drought restrictions – California

It was back to masks at the Fort Bragg City Council meeting this week, as the County’s masking order returned to indoor spaces.

There was some talk before the meeting started about a possible return to hosting the meeting only via web conference, as it was in the height of last year’s pandemic; but no official plans have been made and the city will continue to meet in a hybrid format until further notice.

On the city’s docket Monday evening were numerous issues, perhaps the most pressing of […]

EGYPT: Cairo approves $18m from KFAED for 2 desalination plants in Sinai – Egypt

The $18 million loan recently approved by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi is intended for the construction of seawater desalination plants to supply drinking water to two new towns in the North Sinai governorate.

The Egyptian government wants to build a desalination plant in Rafah, a city that Cairo decided to raze in 2015 to build a new one to extend a security buffer between Egypt and the Gaza Strip.

This real estate project is highly strategic, as Rafah is the only crossing point between Egypt and the […]

The Water From Your Tap Is an Engineering Marvel Millennia in the Making – California

Every day, about 430 million gallons of water enter Los Angeles from the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

The journey begins in the sky, when rain and snow fall on the mountainside; water then flows into the Owens River and travels a human-built route for the next 200-plus miles.

Pipes, tunnels, and canals—all mapped out a century ago—navigate hills, valleys, and desert terrain en route to North America’s third-largest city.
