Costa Rica starts to use a Desalination technology

Due to the frequent drought periods that have been affecting the coastal area of Santa Cruz in Guanacaste, a company finances the creation of a desalination plant which will produce 23 liters of drinking water per second, specifically in the Conchal Reserve, Guanacaste. The project is in charge of the company Florida Ice & Farm (Fifco) after seeing the consequences caused by the strong droughts that have occurred in the area. “This type of innovative works are of great importance for the country, especially as it is a project that is located in an area that has been very […]

Scientists are looking for new ways to desalinate water using energy resources that reduce dependence on dwindling fossil fuels

The Middle East relies heavily on fossil fuels to drive modern desalination technologies that are used to grow food. Currently only 1 percent of desalinated water comes from renewable resources.  Intermittent or low energy supplies are a problem for agricultural settings, where grid networks may not always stretch. Better ways to capture and store renewable energy resources could increase the sustainability of using desalinated water, making it cheaper and easier to use.  “This is a moment of innovation. You can see that in Saudi Arabia, in Oman, in the Emirates and Qatar and in North African countries. New practices […]

Xylem Inc. gives Water Prize to Team of Students from India – USA

Xylem Inc., leading global water technology company, dedicated to solving the world’s challenging water issues, has given the Xylem Water Prize 2017 to a team of students from India. The theme of this year’s International Junior Science Olympiad was “water and sustainability” in the Netherlands. More than 300 students aged 15 years or younger from 50 different countries tested their scientific knowledge and skills. As a sponsor of the IJSO, Xylem launched the first Xylem Water Prize, which invited participating students to produce a video answering the question, “How do you solve water?” All submissions were evaluated for impact, […]

Enhancing thermal desalination with Antiscalants and Dispersants

Dow has introduced a series of water treatment polymers, aiming to prevent scaling or fouling on reverse osmosis (RO) membrane surfaces and hard water scale in industrial, commercial, institutional and public water systems.

The figure demonstrates the compatibility of inhibitor to brine containing high levels of calcium. The x-axis indicates concentration of Ca2+ in ppm while the y-axis indicates transmittance generated when an inhibitor precipitates to create a turbid solution. Somil Mehta, technical service and development manager at Dow Energy and Water Solutions, explained, “As filtered water is separated, the impurities from source water gets concentrated in remaining […]

Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) approved US$29 million for Government of Antigua and Barbuda for recovery after Hurricane Irma

The Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) has approved US$29 million in funding to the Government of Antigua and Barbuda, to assist with recovery efforts after the passage of Hurricane Irma in September. The funds will be used to rehabilitate and reconstruct critical infrastructure in the transportation, education, water and sanitation, and agriculture sectors.

…

The project has several components. Planned infrastructure works include: reconstruction of 11km of road, and repair of a bridge, along with associated drainage works; reconstruction and rehabilitation of education institutions in both Antigua and Barbuda and construction of teacher accommodation in Barbuda; rehabilitation of the […]

Ion concentration polarization (ICP) – Low-Cost and Pump-Free Water Desalination

Low-cost small-scale water desalination could be very useful to ensure the supply of drinking water in developing and remote areas. Ion concentration polarization (ICP) is a desalination technique that requires little energy, which could make it suitable for such applications. The method works by applying a voltage to an ion-selective membrane, which causes a depletion of ions around the membrane. This zone repels charged species. However, the technique is usually performed using expensive microfluidic devices. Hong Liu and colleagues, Southeast University, Nanjing, China, have developed a low-cost, fabric-based desalination setup that uses ICP. The team used polyester fabric, cut […]
