Membrane-Based Salinity Gradient Processes for Desalination Handbook

Two Swansea University chemical engineering academics have written a handbook which reviews current state-of-the-art developments in salinity gradient processes in desalination, one of the most promising technologies to improve energy efficiency in desalination. The impending crisis posed by water stress and poor sanitation represents one of the greatest human challenges for the 21st century, and membrane technology has emerged as a serious contender to confront the crisis on a global scale. Seawater desalination is poised to become one of the main alternative freshwater resources as almost 60% of the world’s population live less than 36 miles from a seacoast. Membrane-based processes […]

6 power and water companies to launch IPOs in next 3 years – Muscat- Oman

As many as six power generation and water desalination companies will launch their initial public offerings (IPOs) to list on the Muscat Securities Market (MSM) within three years, according to Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP). As per their project founders agreements, Oman’s independent water and independent power projects are required to offer a minimum 35 per cent of the share capital to the public within four years of the incorporation of the company. ‚There are six power and water sector projects that will be going for IPOs within next three years. Out of these six projects, four […]

Battery electrode deionization (BDI) -improvement of capacitive deionization (CDI)

A feed solution contained in a reservoir was separately fed to the two inlets of the flow cell using pumps, one desalinated and the other concentrated. This is achieved by applying electrical current to the flow cell through wires using a power source (not shown in this photo). The conductivity of the discharge was then measured using flow conductivity meters located at each outlet, which were monitored by computer. Credit: Taeyoung Kim

Rich Mesostructures Derived from Natural Woods for Solar Steam Generation

…

A tree is a living energy-water system. Intensive study of tree-derived natural wood is of great significance for the sustainable development of human civilization and reduced dependence on nonrenewable resources. Here, we report on the mesostructures of several natural wood materials as well as their thermal conductivities and mechanical properties. We found that natural wood, including hardwood and softwood, possesses excellent hydrophilicity, an interconnected pore network, low thermal conductivity, and various mechanical properties. Inspired by the critical ecological energy-water nexus, high-efficiency solar steam generation based on natural wood is demonstrated in this work. The variation in multiple […]

Egyptian government seeks to use its surplus electricity production in the construction and operation of new desalination plants

The Egyptian government seeks to use its surplus electricity production in the construction and operation of new desalination plants to bridge the potential water gap in Egypt. Government sources said that Egypt surplus electricity production currently stands at 6,000 MW per day, and will increase to 10,000 MW in the summer, benefiting from the added capacities from Siemens new power plants in the New Administrative Capital, Brulus, and Beni Suef. The sources added that the government is currently in talks with five international companies, including Schneider Electric and Siemens AG, to establish desalination plants in cooperation with the […]

Desalination plant opens at Gwadar port (961 m³/d)- Pakistan

Federal Minister for Ports and Shipping Mir Hasil Khan Bizenjo inaugurated a desalination plant on Monday installed at the Gwadar port by China Overseas Port Holding Company for supplying drinking water to the people in the port city. The desalination plant has a production capacity of 961 m³/d of clean drinking water.Speaking at the opening ceremony, Senator Bezenjo, who is also president of the National Party, said that the New Year will witness massive development in Gwadar under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).  He said that the desalination plant would reduce the shortage of drinking water in the port […]

Saudi budge covers projects to provide drinking water and develop water resources

Saudi Arabia’s 2018 budget envisages a capital expenditure of SR205 billion ($54.66 billion) or 21 per cent of total expenditures, 13.6 per cent higher than 2017. The capital expenditure ratio to total government expenditure is projected to reach 22 per cent in 2020, up from 19 per cent in 2017. While public expenditure growth is expected to average 4.3 per cent for the period 2018-2020, the growth of capital expenditure over the medium term is expected to average higher at 8.3 per cent, in order to drive economic activity and generate job opportunities, the Finance Minister said in his […]

Souss Region Farmers Contribute to Building of World’s Biggest Water Desalination Plant Chtouka – Agadir- Morocco

Local farmers in the Souss region are financially contributing to the building of the world’s biggest water desalination plant whose water will help irrigate the plains of Chtouka. The farmers are contributing €1000 (10,000 dh) per each hectare in an unprecedented success story of the public-private partnership in Morocco, local media reported. The contributions will be collected upon the accomplishment of the desalination plant in 2020. The plant will be built by Spanish company Abengoa near Agadir for a total cost of €309 million. The new facility will desalinate 275,000 m3 of water per day with a possibility to […]

Small investors to benefit most from Muscat City Desalination Company (MCDC) debut – Oman

The Capital Market Authority has approved the allocation ratio of the shares of Muscat City Desalination Company (MCDC) taking into consideration the biggest segment of retail investors, the Authority said in a statement. Mohammed Said al Abri, Vice- President for the Capital Market Sector at CMA, said the shares were oversubscribed 19 times, with the Authority opting to give small investors the opportunity to invest in the stock market, thereby infusing new blood into the market. The move also helps safeguard against any concentration of holdings which is a bane of most markets in the region, while also broadening […]

Centre defers clearance for 400 MLD desalination plant in Nemmeli – India

The Environmental Assessment Committee (EAC) of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has deferred clearance for a proposal of the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board(CMWSSB) to set up a 400 MLD desalination plant at Nemmeli. The EAC will review the project only after a team to be set up undertakes a site visit and presents a report. The committee, however, has given CRZ clearance for a 150 MLD plant, while imposing a ‘penalty’ requiring CMWSSB to “not only develop a robust shoreline erosion control and management mechanism of the area but also submit an undertaking […]
