Nuclear Desalination – IAEA

Desalination Thermodynamic Optimization Program (DE-TOP)

DE-TOP has been developed by the International Atomic Energy Agency as a tool for the thermodynamic analysis and optimization of nuclear cogeneration systems (currently with options for nuclear desalination and district heating applications). DE-TOP can be used to models the steam power cycle (Rankine cycle) of different water cooled reactors or fossil plants, and the coupling with any other non-electrical application. With an intuitive graphical user interface and flexible system configuration, the user can select different coupling arrangements between power plant and non-electric application (single steam extraction, multiple steam extraction, backpressure operation, etc.). DE-TOP […]

Nuclear Power Plant permanent desalination plant? Koeberg – South Africa

Plans are underway to build a dozen desalination plants the majority will be temporary with the first ones expected to come online in February.

CAPE TOWN –

Australia’s multi-billion-dollar desalination plant in Perth cost its residents the equivalent of a cup of coffee per week. As western Australia experienced a serious drought, a desalination plant was commissioned and came online a decade ago. Back home, the City of Cape Town is hoping to pump an extra 300 million liters of desalinated water into the supply system. Plans are underway to build a dozen desalination plants, the majority […]

Solvay and Suez Awarded Contract for Water Treatment Plant in China

Solvay and Suez have won the contract to treat brine from reverse osmosis desalination at Wanhua Chemical Industry Park in Yantai (Shandong Province). This contract is part of the Alliance between the companies which was formed to jointly develop and market Advanced Oxidation processes (AOP’s) within China to meet stringent environmental standards. Located in the coastal city of Yantai, the industry park of Wanhua Chemical, a global chemical company, is supplied with water by a reverse osmosis desalination plant. The contract provides a treatment line for the brine produced by the desalination process. With a capacity of 24 000 m3/day, […]

Background to „Teshie Desalination Plant still off-line – water rationed“ Ghana – Teshie / Nungua

The Public Utility Workers’ Union has expressed concern about the agreement between the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) and Messrs Befessa, for the production of portable water from sea water for supply to Teshie Nungua and its environs in Greater Accra. A statement signed and issued by the General Secretary of PUWU, Mr Michael Adumatta Nyantakyi on Monday said the GWCL faces an imminent collapse as a result of the said agreement and therefore called on government to conduct a thorough investigation into the role played by public officials who negotiated the agreement.

The investigation, PUWU said would help to ascertain […]

Teshie Desalination Plant still off-line – water rationed Ghana – Teshie / Nungua

The Teshie Desalination Plant has been out of operation for the past couple of weeks as a result of some technical challenges. Due to the shutdown, the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) is now rationing water to the people of Teshie and Nungua. The Public Relations Officer of GWCL, Stanley Martey, who confirmed the developments to Citi News, noted that water is now being supplied on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from Kpone. “We have a few challenges with the plant. We are trying to resolve it. But what we are doing now is to supply water to Teshie and Nungua […]

Solar-powered device generates electricity through ion transport and could lead to low-cost for seawater desalination

By binding photosensitive dyes to common plastic membranes and adding water, chemists at the University of California, Irvine have made a new type of solar power generator. The device is similar to familiar silicon photovoltaic cells but differs in a fundamental way: Instead of being produced via electrons, its electricity comes from the motion of ions. Dubbed the “synthetic, light-driven proton pump” by its creators, the innovation – because of its ionic basis – has the added potential capability of taking the salt out of seawater. “The materials used to make such a device can be dirt-cheap,” said Shane Ardo, […]

Cabo Verde (formerly Cape Verde) 100% renewable including desalination

…

One novel part in the puzzle may be the nation’s desalination systems, which provide drinking water for much of the population. They currently use large amounts of electricity, but by scheduling their use to times when wind turbines are operating and when electricity demand is low will help maximise their efficiency. And pumping this water up into reservoirs during these minimal usage periods will also enable hydroelectric power to be harnessed at times when more electricity is in demand.
