VA Tech Wabag to bulid 4th evaporator at Tobruk – Libya

Tunis, 4 November 2017: By Libya Herald reporter.

Plans dating back to 2013 to boost the water supply in Tobruk with the installation of a fourth evaporator at the town’s desalination plant are back on track with the Beida-based interim government of Abdullah Thinni approving a LD 29-million letter of credit (L/C) for international water technology company VA Tech Wabag. The contract for a fourth evaporator was given in 2013, but the political crisis prevented it from being implemented. According to CEO of the Austrian branch of Wabag, Mahmut Gedek, the fourth evaporator will have nothing to do with the existing plant […]

Dysfunctional Gwadar desalination plant irks Chief Minister Nawab Sanaullah Zehri – Pakistan – Gwadar

The dysfunctional desalination water plant in Gwadar has irked Balochistan Chief Minister Nawab Sanaullah Zehri who orders immediate functionalising the plant to meet rising demand of water. The plant has capacity to desalinate 2 million gallons of water on regular basis, but it failed to meet the demand of drinkable water in the city. The chief minister Thursday expressed displeasure over the dysfunctional desalination water plant in a briefing in Gawadar. The chief minister was informed during the briefing that the project worth Rs 984 million was passed on to Public Health Engineering (PHE) in May 2016, though, the […]

China boasts continuous growth in sea water desalination capacity – China – Hangzhou

China’s sea water desalination capacity has grown for three straight years, with 158 sets of equipment installed as of the end of 2016.

The daily desalination capacity exceeded 1.38 million cubic meters, according to figures made public at a forum on water pollution control and ecological protection that ended Monday in Hangzhou, capital of east China’s Zhejiang Province. Nearly 70 percent of China’s desalinated sea water was for industrial use as of the end of last year. In northern China’s Liaoning, Hebei and Tianjin regions, desalinated water mainly supplies the hydropower, steel and chemical industries. In southern China’s Zhejiang and Guangdong […]

Red Tide – Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) and Desalination: A Guide to Impacts, Monitoring and Management -UNESCO

…

Arid countries throughout the world are heavily reliant on seawater desalination for drinking and industrial process water. With nearly 20,000 plants operating globally and capacity projected to rise 12% per year, the industry is large and growing. A major operational challenge facing the industry is also expanding globally – the phenomena termed harmful algal blooms or HABs. Algal “blooms” are cell proliferations caused by the growth and accumulation of individual species; they occur in virtually all bodies of water. Cells can reach concentrations sufficient to make the seawater appear red (hence the common term “red tide”), though […]

Dams at 38.5%, desalination timeline remains unclear – South Africa – Cape Town

Total storage in the six major dams supplying Cape Town is down by 0.1% to 38.5% (pdf). That’s a loss of around 519-million litres — slightly less than the average day’s consumption in the city.

Cape Town’s dam levels

Leading the decrease was everyone’s favourite underperforming dam — the Theewaterskloof. The largest reservoir in the Western Cape again struggled to hold its level, dropping from 27.8% last week to 27.3% this. At the same point last year, it was 51% full. The Steenbras Upper Dam dipped to 100.4% — shedding 1% — while its Lower neighbour gained 1.1% overall. […]

How meeting water challenges spurred a dynamic export industry – Israel

…

Israel’s strategy has been long in the making, and relies on a complex framework of public finance, technology, policies, and institutions. Beginning in the 1960s, the Israeli government invested in state-owned enterprises focused on reducing irrigation water use, the single biggest consumer of water. One of these firms, Netafim, was a pioneer in drip irrigation, which improves the efficiency of irrigation to 95%, as compared to 50% using traditional flood irrigation. State investment, including long-term financing arrangements produced by the Ministry of Finance, has also been critical to the expansion of desalination, which now provides some 80% of […]
