Tuning a circular p–n junction in graphene from quantum confinement to optical guiding – Rutgers University-New Brunswick

Abstract

The photon-like propagation of the Dirac electrons in graphene, together with its record-high electronic mobility1,2,3, can lead to applications based on ultrafast electronic response and low dissipation4,5,6. However, the chiral nature of the charge carriers that is responsible for the high mobility also makes it difficult to control their motion and prevents electronic switching. Here, we show how to manipulate the charge carriers by using a circular p–n junction whose size can be continuously tuned from the nanometre to the micrometre scale7,8. The junction size is controlled with a dual-gate device consisting of a planar back gate and […]

New water project for Jabal Akhdar – Oman

Al Jabal al Akhdar, oct 25 –

Construction is well under way on a water desalination project that will provide potable water to Al Jabal al Akhdar — an investment that will also spur tourism and economic development in this popular holiday destination in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate. The Public Authority for Electricity and Water (Diam) is overseeing the implementation of this vital project, which will go a long way in meeting the drinking water requirements of the residents of Jabal al Akhdar. Diam hosted journalists from various media organisations on a visit to Al Jabal al Akhdar for […]

Cape Town scales up water augmentation programme – South Africa – Cape Town

The City’s large-scale augmentation procurement programme involving desalination, aquifers and recycling, among others, is unprecedented in scale.Yesterday, the City initiated Phase 1 of its critical water shortages disaster plan, with water rationing under way as dam levels stand at 38.5% and useable water at 28.5%. The City said yesterday that the unprecedented procurement programme is under way to help supplement water supply during this drought crisis. It is foreseen that between 130 and 240 million litres a day will be at some stage of production between December and May 2018. This includes land- and sea-based desalination, water reclamation and […]

The island of Mayotte, off the coast of Africa, is dying of thirst – France – Mayotte

…

The French-controlled island has had to impose water restrictions after seasonal rains came late — but water resources were already under pressure from a rising population. By December last year locals were reporting days going by without access to drinking water. Fluence — which makes low-energy, water treatment systems — has won a contract to supply three of its seawater desalination units for €1.5 million ($2.3 million). Delivery will take place within two months. Mayotte, situated between Madagascar and the coast of Mozambique in the Indian Ocean, is an overseas outpost of France. It consists of a main […]

Chemicals sent to Tobruk seawater desalination plant – Libya – Tobruk

The operators of the Zliten Desalination Plant have shipped several barrels of chemicals to Tobruk seawater desalination plant after it ceased operation due to running out of these substances. An official at the Tobruk station said the eight desalination plants in Libya along the Libyan coast from Tobruk to Zuwara need chemicals constantly and all declared a state of emergency for the severe shortage of chemical supplies.

„It is illegal to sell water“ Water and Sanitation Department spokesman Sputnik Ratau said – South Africa – Cape Town

….

Meantime, with water rationing underway, and dire warnings of “day zero” when supply will run completely dry, enterprising profiteers are taking advantage of the shortage. Water restrictions, threats of prosecution and a sense of panic have some residents willing to pay for alternative water supplies for gardening, swimming pools and flushing toilets.

Water and Sanitation Department spokesman Sputnik Ratau said the government was the custodian or trustee of water resources, including dams, rivers, lakes, pans, wetlands and groundwater. „It is illegal to sell water. The only case in which water is sold legally is as bottled water,“ he […]

Shutdown of the Point Lisas Desalination Plant – Trinidad – Point Lisas

Citizens are advised that water schedules throughout Trinidad may be affected by the planned shutdown of the Point Lisas Desalination Plant from Monday October 30 to Sunday November 5, 2017. In a release, the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) said it was advised by the Desalination Company of Trinidad and Tobago (Desalcott) of the rescheduled planned shutdown of its Desalination Plant at Point Lisas to facilitate maintenance works. The planned shutdown will now take place from Monday 30th October to Sunday 5th November 2017 and will have a significant impact on WASA’s overall supply position in Trinidad. The Desalcott […]

Asahi Kasei’s Microza™ Hollow-Fiber Membrane Selected for Desalination Plant in Kuwait Japan – Tokyo

Microza™ hollow-fiber membrane for water treatment from Asahi Kasei was selected as pretreatment membrane for the Doha Phase 1 reverse osmosis (RO)1 seawater desalination plant to be built near Kuwait City by Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction, a major Korean plant construction company. The Asahi Kasei membrane treatment capacity for this project is scheduled to be 610,000 tons per day, representing the largest hollow-fiber filtration membrane order received by Asahi Kasei. Many RO plants for seawater desalination are planned in Kuwait and other countries of the Middle East to address chronic shortages of fresh water, with microfiltration (MF) and […]

Cape Town will have its first desalination plants working just weeks before the city’s dams are expected to go dry South Africa – Cape Town

That’s according to Xanthea Limberg, the City of Cape Town mayoral committee member for informal settlements, water and waste services, and energy . „Monwabisi and Strandfontein [plants] are currently scheduled [to start operating in] February but we are exploring opportunities to implement earlier, once internal funding issues are resolved,“ Limberg told The Times. Mayor Patricia de Lille said earlier this month that the municipal water supply might dry up in March if usage was not reduced. Chris Braybrooke, general manager of water technology company Veolia, said completion of tendering for the desalination plants should have been six months ago […]
