Growing crops from seawater takes root in arid Jordan desert

The innovative facility brings together saltwater cooling and solar-powered desalination technology to produce both vegetables and fresh water.

Water-poor Jordan has launched a project that uses seawater coupled with clean energy to produce crops in an arid desert not far from the Red Sea.

Jordan’s King Abdullah II and Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, which contributed most of the $3.7 million cost, inaugurated the facility in the kingdom’s port city of Aqaba this week. Haakon told reporters he was “impressed by the way innovative ideas have been translated into a plant the size of four football fields.” […]

The water crisis in Iran; the government has „taken out with the permission of the leader from the National Development Fund“

… Eshagh Jahangiri, the first vice president of Iran, has said that the first government of Hassan Rouhani, „with a special permission“, has received Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei only once from the National Development Fund.

Mr. Jahangiri has said the reason for this is to provide supplies for drinking water from the West of Iran, with a surplus of over $ 8 billion. The first lieutenant of the Iranian president read on the issue of drinking water as a national issue, saying that this is the only time that the government has withdrawn a special permit […]

Poseidon’s Carlsbad desalination plant plagued by problems – USA-California

Contact: Nicole Lampe, Resource Media

Huntington Beach proposal faces steep opposition  Orange County, CA – Poseidon Water, and its Canadian-owned parent company Brookfield Infrastructure Partners, have spent millions trying lobbying for approval of a new desalination plant in Huntington Beach.

The billion dollar facility would be the twin of a Carlsbad plant Poseidon built in December 2015, which has been plagued with problems since its opening. As Voice of San Diego reported yesterday, the Carlsbad plant failed to deliver about 20 percent of the promised water in 2016, and produced no water for 46 days. During its 18-month […]

Oman to build two mini desalination plants

Oman’s Public Authority for Electricity and Water (PAEW) has floated tenders for a pair of small water desalination plants (typically with a capacity of 1,000 to 10,000 cu m/day) to be implemented for the first time on a build-own-operate (BOO) basis.

PAEW – also known as ‘Diam’ – follows a new project delivery model adopted by the authority in 2015 that advocates a role for private investors in the development of small water schemes in isolated parts of the country, reported Oman Observer.

This is in contrast to the PAEW’s longstanding practice of procuring water desalination capacity […]

USA Bureau of Reclamation Awards $3.62M for Desalination and Water Purification Research in 13 States

… Bureau of Reclamation Acting Commissioner Alan Mikkelsen announced today that Reclamation will provide $3.62 million to conduct laboratory and pilot-scale desalination and water purification research in 13 states.

Sixteen laboratory projects, four new pilot-scale projects and one continuing pilot-scale project were selected. The $3.62 million in federal funding is being matched by $3.52 million in non-federal funds. „Desalination and water treatment provide a potential new source of water for communities throughout the West,“ Mikkelsen said.

„The research funding provided today will enable new technologies to be studied to see if they can help improve the treatment […]

ItN Nanovation AG obtains a binding order for water treatment plants for the Iranian market

ItN Nanovation AG (ISIN DE000A0JL461) has received a binding order for peripheral water treatment plants for Iran. The order value amounts to over € 2m. The ordered water treatment plants are of the types „CER@SENIC“ and „CER@WELL“. „CER@SENIC“ removes particularly arsenic from ground and drinking water. In the province of Kerman in Iran, a testing facility has just been put into operation successfully, allowing to remove the arsenic contained in the water almost completely. „CER@WELL“ is used to clean soiled tap water in buildings and removes dirt, germs, bacteria and nitrate. The delivery of the plants is to start still […]

Eiffage Génie Civil and Tedagua deliver Djibouti renewable desalination development

A €63 million development in Djibouti will see up to 45,000 m3/day of drinking water delivered by renewable powered desalination.

The country’s Economy and Finance Ministry has commissioned the deal, with the National Water and Wastewater Treatment Office (ONEAD) serving as project manager. French engineering company Eiffage Génie Civil, taking €37 million from the deal, will deliver it in a consortium with Spanish water company Tedagua.

To be built in the Doraleh neighbourhood, the desalination plant will initially have a capacity of 22,500 m3 /day with plans to extend production to 45,000 m3/day. In addition, a 5,000 […]

Carbon nano tubes

Scientists are using carbon nanotubes as a filter to desalinate water…

“We found that carbon nanotubes with diameters smaller than a nanometer bear a key structural feature that enables enhanced transport. The narrow hydrophobic channel forces water to translocate in a single-file arrangement, a phenomenon similar to that found in the most efficient biological water transporters,” said Ramya Tunuguntla, an LLNL postdoctoral researcher. The nanotube pores have been specifically sized to filter water molecules in a single file, effectively let through as much as possible while blocking the larger salt ions. This method means far faster desalination times. “You can imagine […]

Saudi’s Shoabia 4 desalination project to be supervised by Pöyry

…

Months after Doosan secured the Shoaiba 4 desalination development and the Saline Water Conversion Company (SWCC) has awarded Pöyry with the owner’s engineer services assignment for the project.

As part of the arrangement, Pöyry’s will review the contractor’s engineering and supervise construction, erection and commissioning.

In April SWCC awarded Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction the US$422 million contract to build the 400,000 m3/day reverse osmosis desalination facility. Originally the development, in the pipeline for several years, was planned for Jeddah city but was then changed to Shoaiba, a costal area 50 miles to the south. […]

16 new desalination plants – capacity of 473,000 m³ – Egypt

… Moustafa Madbouly, the Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, said that the implementation of 16 water desalination stations is taking place. The stations’ capacity is estimated at 473,000 cubic metres per day and will be built in five governorates. Madbouly said that the stations aim to serve the new communities and coastal cities underway, including New Alamein and East Port Said.

Madbouly explained that the governorates where desalination will be taking place include Matruh, North and South Sinai, the Red Sea, and Port Said. He emphasised that the expansion in desalination stations is a result of […]
